COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

Pours a reddish amber with active carbonation. Aroma is light lagered malt. Flavor is well balanced. Deep malty backbone finished with spritely hops and carbonation for a crisp clean finish.

Bottle. Pours a clear golden with a big, fluffy off-white/yellowish head. Decent lacing. Hoppy aroma with a cereal touch. Slightly tart. Sweetish, hoppy flavour with a touch of citrus and pine. Has a sort of stale feeling to it, but without actually being stale. Bitter hop finish with a lingering dryness. Pretty decent. 16.07.11.

I wondered for ages when I was going to get to try this iconic beer. Pours golden amber with a large fluffy white had and quite a distinct malty fruitiness to the beer. Quite a pleasant aroma that I see comes from a warm fermentation with lager yeast. There’s prominent carbonation to the mouthfeel that is initially quite overt and then bubbles along on the palate for quite a while. There’s an almost gooseberry tang and then fruit leather and bitterness. Intriguing. There’s quite a lot going on culminating in a long tart finish. Very likeable beer.

Bottle- Pours a clear dark copper color with a nice head and some lacing. Aroma is a pleasant roasted malt with traces of sice and citrus mixed in. Nice mild malt flavor with a sort of earthiness. A bit of sweetness and herbs seem to round it out. Just a touch of bitterness and a dry finish. Fairly medium body, crisp and clean. Very well balanced. Smooth drinker that goes down easy. Great example of the style, an American original. This is a must try beer.

Bottle from Appellation Wines. Creamy, grassy, caramel, malt aroma. Amber brown colour, reasonable head. Sour grassy caramel malt flavour. Slightly sour aftertaste. Drinkable but not great.

Test vom 6.11.2005, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 11,11,12,10,14,11 - 11,15

Aroma is thick and intense. Lots of caramel malt and buttery. Floral as hell (hoppy) with a breadlike/yeasty follow-up. Nice, fluffy, off white head and caramel colored body. Taste followed the nose. Some hopiness up front in the taste with some malts consisting of caramel/biscuit flavors. Slight hop bitters at the end too. Pretty darn good. Like an amber.
