COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

Had this one both from tap and bottle. Yesterday had it from tap. Pretty light beer, easy to drink. Tasted a bit like caramel/toffee.

Bottle. Pours an amber color with a decent light tan head that lasts. Aroma is of caramel malt and hops. Taste mostly of roasted malts, but is slightly sweet with a slightly bitter finish. Overall, a good sessionable brew great for the spring/summer.

A reddish copper colored brew with a thin white head. The aroma is faint but consists of subtle malt and floral hops. The flavor is a mix of nutty malt and jabs of hops bitterness and a light caramel finish. Not bad, an inoffensive beer.

June 8, 2011. 4.8% abv; 355mL bottle, refrigerated, BBD: 05/12, lager glass. Aroma of sweet malted barley with some mild citrus rinds and resinous piney hops. Clear dark orangey amber colour with large visible bubbles. A white pillowy head with decent lacing. Doesn’t last too long. Bitterness is a bit overpowering with herbal, spice and citrus flavours. Hops covers much of the malt that was present. A medium body with a sappy sort of finish. Carbonation is refreshing. A little too resiny which could afford more malt-hops balance. Good, but I don’t see what the big deal is.

Draught in Cafe Frape, Mestreech. Dark copper colour with medium firm creamy head. Flowery nose. Aroma is fruity, malty with harsh but weak hops.Flavour is kind of sour with hoppy finish. Excellent!

Pretty much clear, copper body and creamy head. Hoppy aroma with grass, fresh herbs, toffee candy and a little nutty. Quite distinct. Balanced and straightforward taste, slightly bitter and thin. Long aftertaste for such a mild and easily drinkable beer. Not overly fond of the nose on this but a pleasant drink. Well brewed! (33cl bottle)

Tap @ some bar in SF a couple blocks from Haight & Ashbury. Poured a light amber. Grassy aroma with some background malt. Taste is cereal malt with some earthy hops. Thinly textured. This is essentially a fizzy yellow beer with some additional nuance. I’d prefer this over a macro lager, but not much else.

Amber beer with foamy white head and banana/ peppery aroma. Smooth mouth feel with prickly carbonation and a bitter finish. Some butterscotch and overripe fruit flavours.
