COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

Alc. by Volume: 4.9%, Availability: Year-round, Malt: Blend of 2-Row Pale & Caramel, Hops: Northern Brewer

Anchor Steam® Beer owes its deep amber color, thick, creamy head, and rich, distinctive flavor to a historic brewing process like none other. It is a process that combines deep respect for craft brewing tradition with many decades of evolution to arrive at a unique approach: a blend of pale and caramel malts, fermentation with lager yeast at warmer ale temperatures in shallow open-air fermenters, and gentle carbonation in our cellars through an all-natural process called kräusening.

Anchor Steam® Beer derives its unusual name from the 19th century when “steam” was a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. While the origin of the name remains shrouded in mystery, it likely relates to the original practice of fermenting the beer on San Francisco’s rooftops in a cool climate. In lieu of ice, the foggy night air naturally cooled the fermenting beer, creating steam off the warm open pans. Once a nickname for any Californian or West Coast beer brewed under these conditions, today the name “steam” is a trademark of Anchor Brewing and applies only to the singular process and taste of our flagship brand - San Francisco’s original Anchor Steam® Beer. The classic of American brewing tradition since 1896.

0,355 l bottle, best before 5/2016. Clear, light amber with a small, frothy or creamy, slowly diminishing, tan head. Weak aroma of nuts, raisins and toffee. Sweetish, malty taste of nuts, raisins, toffee and honey. Medium body, slightly creamy mouthfeel, flat carbonation. Short, slightly bitter and pleasant finish. Not a real explosion of aroma and taste but highly quaffable and tasty. Very nice!

Ah the famous Anchor steam beer, by some metrics America's only truly indigenous-origin style beer. As described, it is indeed a crossover between a lager and an ale. Pours a very nice clear amber orange color, with a large creamy head and plenty of lacing, very lager-ish. The nose is brown sugar caramel malt and some grassy hops, moderate intensity. The taste is very intriguing and flavorful, caramel maltiness balanced with an earthy/grassy bitterness, almost a caramel malt-accented pilsner. Bonus is the tropical fruity finish, which is more reminiscent of an ale, combined with a slick earthy bitterness. Very delicious, but in my experience this seemed to be excessively carbonated which detracted from the texture and distracted from the flavor. Still quite enjoyable and drinkable, this would be an ideal table beer.

Nice red shining color. Minimal head. Some malty aroma. Taste is quite flat and aroma is missing. Starts quite neutral, in the middle comes some bitterness.

Clear medium amber with an of white head, almost no lacing. Taste is creamy and with floral hints, pilsner like yeast and faint fruity hops. Aftertaste of tropical fruits and candy.

Tympeähkö ja alumiininen maku. Ei niin hyvä, mutta hieno pullo. Ja pihalla iso myrsky.

Blood orange colour with small white head. Decent body. Very malty aroma - flavours based on the grassy pilsener base but with added sweetness from the malts and some tangy fruit.

Pours hazy pale amber with one finger of creamy ivory head diminishing gradually to a thick cap, spotty lacing. (4/5) Nose is caramel malt, grassy and herbal. (6/10) Taste is moderate sweet, mild bitter. (6/10) Medium body, moderate carbonation, off-dry mildly bitter finish. (4/5) Not bad for a malty beer. Decently well-balanced malt sweetness that doesn’t overwhelm and finishes reasonably dry and bitter. Pretty sessionable, I’d say. (12/20)
