Anchor Steam® Beer owes its deep amber color, thick, creamy head, and rich, distinctive flavor to a historic brewing process like none other. It is a process that combines deep respect for craft brewing tradition with many decades of evolution to arrive at a unique approach: a blend of pale and caramel malts, fermentation with lager yeast at warmer ale temperatures in shallow open-air fermenters, and gentle carbonation in our cellars through an all-natural process called kräusening.

Anchor Steam® Beer derives its unusual name from the 19th century when “steam” was a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. While the origin of the name remains shrouded in mystery, it likely relates to the original practice of fermenting the beer on San Francisco’s rooftops in a cool climate. In lieu of ice, the foggy night air naturally cooled the fermenting beer, creating steam off the warm open pans. Once a nickname for any Californian or West Coast beer brewed under these conditions, today the name “steam” is a trademark of Anchor Brewing and applies only to the singular process and taste of our flagship brand - San Francisco’s original Anchor Steam® Beer. The classic of American brewing tradition since 1896.

Bottle BBE: 1/2016. Lightly chilled. Crystal clear amber body with full, thick, tight off-white head. High carbonation evident. Biscuity aromas with honey and vanilla sweetness, gentle floral notes and a slight barnyard essence. Medium sweetness followed by a crisp bitterness, a well-balanced if simple taste. Fairly high carbonation, but not overly fizzy. Light body concealed well by a foamy texture. Short to medium finish. A classic, highly-drinkable beer that doesn’t offend.

Helder amberkleurig bier. Aroma is bloemig, vanille en citrus. Smak begint zoet en bitter in de afdronk. Licht trekkend.

Mild tasting, with a moderate hop presence. It really does, in some ways, have char’s of both a lager and ale. Thanks to the new hop guide, I can say that I don’t like Northern Brewer hops as a finish/aromatic hop. The hop aromatics and flavors in this beer present as a slightly woody and earthy/musty note that I don’t find particularly agreeable.

From 345 ml bottle. Clear honey-Amber in the glass with a creamy lasting white head. Aromas of cut grass, raisins, honey and light citrus. Starts out with a sweet malty note that’s quickly overtaken by firmer grass and grapefruit hop flavours. Finishes quite cleanly with a gently fruity aftertaste. Nice.

Bottle from a 980 yen tasting set at Liquor Mountain with a free glass! Steam Beer - the classic that introduced an indigenous California beer & helped kicked off the craft beer movement. A deep copper color pour with a solid beige head with nice lacing and staying power. A big malty caramel nose with enticing fruit overtones. Medium to light bodied with a somewhat abrasive carbonation but it does give a very dry finish. The taste is malty caramel, some fruits and more bitter than I expected but it has a crisp flavor and each sip makes me want to go back for more. Better than expected.

12 Oz bottle. Pours clear amber with a frothy white head. Aromas are fairly subtle, cereal grain and minerals, some apricot. Flavor is mild sweet, worth cereal grain and some cherry at first. Quickly transitions to an herby hop bitterness that lingers throughout, with some nutty notes at the end. Medium-low body with a slick mouthfeel and sharp carbonation. Overall, just ok. Not very complex, and while tasty enough, nothing noteworthy on any of the fronts.
