COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

[355ml bottle, Appellation Wines, Edinburgh] Pours crystal clear golden amber colour with decent white head. Sweet caramel malt aromas, some toffee in there as well. Faint hop trace on the nose. On tasting, the toffee malt characters come out first, before the finish is taken by hops and ends quite crisply with a nice dryness. Supremely drinkable, to think people once looked down on steam beers as being unrefined [16052011]

12 ounce stubby bottle poured into a 10 ounce glass. It’s been years - perhaps a decade even - since I last had the famous Anchor Steam Beer. Pouring it again, for the first time, and I’m struck by the loads upon loads of carbonation in the brew. The bubbles just go on for days. Upon further inspection, this beer is brilliantly clear, as you can easily read the label from behind the glass. A big frothy head bursts to the top of the brew, but recedes just as quickly. Color is darker than gold but not quite amber, settling in at a rusty orange. Smells of a light grain, almost like a pilsner. First taste is sweet, almost fruity, with a very sweet malt finish. This - this is not like I remember at all! Moderate bitterness in the finish, but not overpowering at all. Slightly sticky and relatively thick mouth feel, though the heavy carbonation helps to scrub the taste off your tongue as you drink it. As you continue to taste the malt becomes more and more pronounced, and it works in context with the yeast profile to create almost a jam and bread flavor. An underrated gem.

Aroma is minerally, light malt, fruit apple pear. Appearance is clear copper with small light tan head. Taste is caramel malt with some apple. Solid hop bitterness but not much aroma. Hint of roast. Palate is medium light and very crisp. Overall not bad. Not my favorite style but still enjoyable.
