COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

The rich amber color and thick head, invite one to a deliciously flavored beer. This is one I would definitely have again.

Thick, off white head. Light, hoppy aroma. Semi-transparent copper in appearance. Taste is bitter watery with a hint of malt. Somewhat fizzy. Was too plain for my taste, but a decent brew.

Bottle. Copper clear, thick offwhite head. Smells of flowers and malts. Taste is quite malty, much caramel and some fruity flavours too. Finish is with good hoppy bitterness, some citrus zests there. Good beer that actually defines a style.

A clear copper pour with a frothy, off-white head. The aroma is bready with some caramel. The medium body has an oily texture with lively carbonation. The taste is slightly sweet in the beginning, but the finish is mildly bitter.

On draft at the Anchor tasting room after the tour. This one pours a hazy golden amber color and topped by a small head of off white foam that settles quickly and leaves small spots of lacing behind. The aroma is fairly mild with notes of grassy hops, caramel malts, clean grains, and a touch of yeast. The flavor follows and shows a little more life than the aroma with the grassy hops, grains, and caramel malts balanced nicely with the house yeast thats adds a touch of dryness. Medium bodied and almost creamy with balanced carbonation that leads to a clean, crisp finish. This is a nice little session ale, but definitely cool to drink it at the brewery with so much history behind the beer.

12 oz bottle from Mainbrew - Copper color. Not much in the way of aroma. Not a ton of hops. Solid beer, but not too exciting. If I found it somewhere there wasn’t a lot of options, I’d probably drink more than a few. But, living in a city with nearly 40 microbreweries, I don’t see the point.

12oz pour and not a fan. sorry but this is just an average type beer with a mild malty sweetness and little action going on.
