COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

Poured into my Anchor Steam shaker glass. Clear amber color with a thin white head. Aroma is mostly malt and maybe some yeast. Flavor is bready and malty. Overall a decent beer, however I enjoy Anchor Steams other offerings.

Poured into an Anchor Steam pint glass. Clear amber with a light tan head. Aroma is light maltiness. Flavor is very bready and malty. Very slight hop bitterness on the finish. Palate is medium bodied with good carbonation. Overall a good mild ale. Think pale ale with more flavor.

UPDATED: MAY 16, 2011 12oz bottle. Thin medium fading white head. Very pleasant malty smell. Pale orange-clear appearance. Easy to drink, subtle and refreshing flavor. Lively carbonation, maybe too much. Kind of a metallic aroma maybe, not too much there. Nice aftertaste.

Bottle. Pours copper/amber, cream-colored head. Aroma of bread, herbs, and a bit of caramel. Light sweetness in taste followed by medium hop bitterness. Medium body with lively carbonation. Finish is pretty short. Overall this is a good all-around beer. It fits in with any season, good flavor, drink one or drink many.

On tap at Roger’s in Rockaway with my little brother John after the Furthur Show. Clear amber color, not much of a head. Starts out with some sweet malty notes, caramel, and then finishes nice and bitter. Easy drinking, body is light to medium, and well balanced.
