COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

Brownish amber, good granular head that fades to thin white bubbles. Picks up an additional appearance point for packaging. Flavor improves as some of the carbonation is relieved-- hoppy, grainy with some underlying malt sweetness. Palate is average consistancy, fizzy, trails bitter. I didn’t think that I was going to like it but I did.

A classic to be sure, but one now far outclassed by the myriad of micros that it made possible. Slightly corse hop flavor is mild and lager character is noticable. A brilliant alternative to Budmilcoors, but a fading memory of the micro revolution.

This is an ordinary, middle of the road brew - nice maltiness with slight hops. Enjoyable and drinkable, but I prefer their Liberty Ale.

A nice balance of everything, somewhat bitter, but smooth and very easy to drink

Not a good session brew as the fruitiness (green apples) just takes over and demands your attention. Nicely balanced with a thick malty body and aromatic hops. Good sip and savor brew.

I felt that, for the price, this was a pretty average beer.

Not a bad brew, I had my first last night. Crisp hops, malty goodness.

I just don’t really enjoy this. A full body with some crisp sharpness but just not real good.
