COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

UPDATED: MAR 1, 2011 One of my favourite regular beers. It’s very refreshing, with a bitter hoppy aroma, a beautiful bewitching amber colour and a deep full malty taste with a subtlety of caramel on the finish. Very unique tasting easy drinking beer.

On tap, Old Mill Tavern, Chester NJ. Beer pours smooth brown, with a lively white head. Aroma is slightly hoppy, more toasted; attack is smooth and nutty with hop overtones, not much. Finish is smooth and clean. Great session beer. Neat that is a lager yeast, brewed at ale temperatures, since SanFran did not have refrigeration or ice when Anchor Brewing Co. began.

Scopey (1192) - Croydon, Surrey, ENGLAND - FEB 25, 2011
On tap at the Admirals Club Lounge in the Dallas-FW Airport. It pours amber with a foamy white head and fairly high carbonation. The nose is toast, bread, caramel and citrus fruits. The taste is toast, wood, caramel, some date, metal and lemon, with a dry, almost burnt finish. It’s clearly better than average, but still pretty boring.

Bottle. Light Amber color with full, slightly off white head. Citrus and resin hop aroma. Flavor is medium sweet with good bitterness to balance. Crisp and slightly astringent on the palate. A nice refreshing ale.

I really enjoyed this highly drinkable beer. It has a nice Amber color, a medium body, a fruity aroma and a fruity and mildly bitter taste. That said, its flavoring was not too complex, which is why this is not one of my favorite beer styles.
