COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

Anchor Steam is a nice medium amber color - even a little tint of orange. The beer pours with a fluffy one finger head with a very long retention that leaves some impressive sticky lacing on the glass. The aroma is of malted barley with some slight hop notes. There is not a lot of complexity to the aroma and I can’t tell if I am "forcing" a smell but there may be hints of some fruits and other grains I can’t identify. The taste is similar to the aroma consisting mostly of malted barley with the hops taking a stronger presence in comparison. The taste is a little sweet with the fruit notes and a bit of nuttiness coming through. A very enjoyable flavor that is not too heavy. This could easily be a session beer. The beer is moderately carbonated and the moutfeel is tingly but smooth. Light to medium body. A very pleasant beer and I would recommend it when you aren’t looking to find something new and crazy but just want a straight up beer with a little class.

bottle from Bierzwerg. Clear amber colour, off-white head. Malty base, shy hoppy flavours with a spicy background and a shy resiny-herbal touch. A classic beer, well crafted and well balanced.

Grima (1200) - Saarburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, GERMANY - JAN 18, 2011
bottle from bierzwerg! The beer in the glass is reminiscent of a smoked beer, the foam is powerful, medium pores and keeps up for a long time. Starts very strange, but interesting. Strong spicy, malty and well-pleasing, the taste is fruity and sweet. To the middle part takes the bitterness out significantly. Interesting beer!!

1pt 6fl oz bottle poured into a pint glass. Sparkling amber with ample creamy white head. Aroma is floral hops. Flavor is quite hoppy, very much like an IPA. Finish is lasting bitter and slightly metallic. Interesting brew.
