COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

A beer I didn’t like for the first time I tasted it. Amber in color with good balance of hops and malts. Not very bitter.

Anchor Steam beer has a thick, cream-colored, frothy head and a clear, amber appearance, with high carbonation. Nice lacing is left behind. The aroma is pretty neutral, but one can sniff out a spicy hop note. Taste is a mild, beer flavor, with floral hop undertones. Mouth-feel is light and watery, and Anchor Steam finishes refreshing and not dry, like American-style lagers. Overall, this is a very good beer, and I highly recommend it. RJT

Bottle pours amber with a creamy white head. Aroma shows notes of bread, toffee, floral hops and a touch of nuts. Flavor shows the same. Overall body is moderate, creamy soft, and finishes with balanced bitterness.

Decent beer. Dark caramel color similar to an amber ale. Subtle hop taste with an roasted malty finish.

Notes from Friday, August 6, 2010 12 oz. bottle from HyVee Marion Ar: A bit of malt, caramel, and grassy hops. Nothing too complex, but appealing nonetheless. Ap: Pours a light, slightly opaque amber with a 3/4" head that recedes quickly. F: Flavor mirrors the aroma. Light hop bitterness on the finish. P: Medium body with effervescent bubbles. O: My first beer of this style, and it’s okay. I guess it’s one of those we all ought to try though.

Beautiful amber color. Nice balance of hops and malt - crisp and not too bitter. I’ve never had a steam beer before so this was a nice surprise.
