COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

Tap at Beer, Bourbon and BBQ Festival in NYC. Pours amber-red with a medium, off-white head. Malty aroma with some fine, earthy hops. Flavor holds some bready sweetness, balanced by citrus and pine hops. Medium in body with average carbonation. Finishes with a delicate balance and some lingering bitterness. Very nice.

Bottle: Pours a Nice Golden color, with a frothy white head at the top. The Head doesn’t seem to want to dissipate here, nice carbonation as well. My first "California Common" brew, and its definately a little different than anything I’ve had before. A little toasted malt, a little earthiness, a little nuttiness, coupled with a touch of citrus, a touch of breadiness. It seems that it’s all very mild overall, but combined it’s a unique mix that creates something that is very different overall. Nice Brew

A good beer from Anchor, a runner up to my favorite of theirs — Liberty Ale.

Bottle. Poured a clear golden-copper color with a thick, dense beige head that slowly receded while large spots of lacing clung to the side of the glass. Aroma of light toasted malts, some soft caramel, and nuts along with a light floral hoppiness paired with a hint of citrus (orange). Smooth, sweet entry leads directly into a moderate toasted maltiness with some light bready characteristics peaking through before a light sweet caramel flavor is offset by a lightly bitter, dry hoppiness that lingers softly into the finish where a tad more caramel shares the spotlight with some soft fruity undertones. Moderate carbonation and average mouth feel that ends cleanly. Overall, a pleasant, simple beer that was nice to drink on a warm day. Certainly my favorite representation of the style thus far.
