COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

Bottle. Pours a light amber/orange color, with a big frothy off white head. Aroma is very mild, with some caramel malt and grains. Flavor is mostly caramel malt, along with some bread and grains. Also a slight amount of hops and citrus. The body is medium with a dry and crisp mouthfeel. Overall a pretty refreshing lager, that is worth checking out!

Pours golden / bronze. Nice lasting offwhite head. Aroma is sweet malt, caramel, hops. Taste is hops. sweet malty caramel. Palate is medium body, smooth and creamy, nice carbonation. Finishes sweet malt and caramel balanced by slightly bitter hops. Goes down smooth and easy. A very good and tasty brew.

I can’t remember the last time I had one of these, it’s been years, well before I got on this site. Stuff has a ton of flavor, way more hop than I remember. It’s a big, full bodied beer, with a good bit of malt. Really sits pretty heavy, but has a nice balanced, if bold flavor to it.

Every time I have one I forget how much I like it and forget it is as hoppy as it is. I think the craft beer movement owes some thanks to Anchor Steam, it was out there long before micro brews were readily available. Good Stuff. Serving: Tap and Bottle

Originally rated August 2004. Had myself two Anchor Brewery beers tonight. The first one, being this Steam, poured a deep amber colour with a small head and not much lacing. It had a slight fruity and malty aroma. Flavours started smooth and then, a mild bitterness kicked in. Also had hints of nuts. This brew is their most popular. I then tested their second most popular: Liberty Ale, which I much prefered. This one was a good session beer, but not overly impressed.

Bottle 35,5 cl. Pours amber with a small white head and a malty aroma. The taste is not to sweet with notes of malts, fresh fruits, toffee and a bitter hoppy finish. Nice!

Delicious brew. I first encountered Steam Beer in the page of Frank Norris’s McTeague, and despite the fact that the book ends with two men handcuffed together and ripping each other apart in the middle of the desert, I still wanted to try steam Beer. Aroma is bitter hops and almost earthen. Color is a pale amber with a nice little head. Taste is grass and maybe a little licorice. Palate is light and dry. Great, classic brew.
