Commercial Description:
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

Lovely in the glass, with a deep amber hue and a nice foamy head. Taste starts sweet but finishes slightly bitter. More body than most lagers. Goes great with summer foods off the grill.

Nice reddish copper color. Very macro aroma. Malty and slightly sweet almost a cherry flavor. but finishes very good and bitter. not a kick ass beer but great if you want to get your macro swillin freinds to drink something other than miller.

he probado varias de estas cervezas en CA pero casi siempre en draft. se van bien, buen sabor y cuerpo. nada fuera de lo ordinario pero valen la pena probarlas.

Deep copper/amber color with a good thick white head. Complex bouquet of sweet roasted malts and aeromatic, citrusy hops. Medium bodied with good carbonation and desent lace. Malty, sweet taste that gives way to a well balanced and appetizing hop bitterness and an alcoholic pepperiness, with a long and warming finish. Trademarking "steam beer" seems a bit selfish and oportunistic, especially considering no one really knows how "steam beer" was originally made. None the less, this commercially successful brew, for good and bad reasons, remains a historically important brew and well deserves its place among the best american ales. Try with a rich seafood soup, or a hearty grilled surf and turf platter.

Amber pour with white head (bottle into pint glass). Simple pale ale with mellow barely bitter hops. Not much going on in the way of an aroma, just small traces of floral hops. Medium bodied on the palate, fizzy without much bite or finish. Overall, descent but very forgettable.

A beautiful, clear red-amber with a foamy off-white head that seemed to hold up pretty well and provided some unexpected lacing. Aroma is subtle, but hoppy and fruity. Taste is clean, crisp, slightly hoppy, but not necessarily watery. I give this pretty high marks for taking what at first seems to be an average beer and taking it up a level. Highly recommended to anyone used to macro-brews, but (foolishly) not interested in murky Belgians.

Fairly bitter initial taste but good aftertaste. Nice brown color with very light head. Better with food.

I like the color - clear golden brown. The head is small and fluffy, but it dissipates quickly. Smell is malty with some hops. Taste is about the same. It’s too fizzy to feally taste anything anyway.

I am rating from a bottle. I have had this on tap before, and I think that it is a bit smoother and less fizzy that way.
