COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

12 oz bottle from the LCBO, served in a lager glass. Pours a sparkling clear amber-orange with a tall frothy tan head. Good head retention and reasonable lacing. Aroma is caramel malts and floral/herbal hops with a hint of earth. Flavour is sweet throughout with notes of honey and nutty/grainy malts. Hops provide adequate balance without being overpowering. Finish is moderate and hoppy. On the palate, medium in body with a watery texture and lively carbonation. Overall, this beer feels a bit confused: it has both lager and ale qualities and seems to be aiming simultaneously for clean-and-refreshing and deep-and-sophisticated. It never really attains either. 2010-03-18

Bottle. Amber, creamy off-white head. High bead. Mild aroma of fruity malt with a little resin and citrus. Plain sweet and earthy malts with a drying spicy hop finish. Perhaps my lack of nostalgia for this beer is an issue here. It’s drinkable.

Bottle. A - Light orange/amber color. Decent sized white frothy head that quickly disappears. Sl - Fairly light, with scents of floral hops and some light citrus. Also a bit of malt and bread. T - Hops and malts are pretty well balanced with hops slightly edging out the malts. The hops provide a floral and earthy flavor. Also some zesty lemony flavor. Very slight saltiness as well. Pretty clean flavored beer. M - Smooth and pretty light bodied. Finishes fairly dry. D - Easy to drink, with good clean flavors. Would make a pretty good session beer, although it is hurt a bit in that department by the dryness (may need to have a more juicy/thirst quenching beer every now and then). Notes: Nothing outstanding about this beer but it is a solid everyday type of beer.

Gold amber pour with slight head. Smells like a basic lager. Not much flavor. This is a bit overrated in my opinion.

Thick, vanilla colored head; deep gold color; feels crisp in the mouth, reminiscent of a how a good mass-produced American lager tastes on a hot summer day; hint of creamy taste; subtle flavor, not complex, but not dull.;

Dark orange color, small, frothy white head; aroma doesn’t give much, but faint scents of floral hops and honey sweetness; light-medium body, aggressive carbonation; flavor is fairly malty sweet with some stuffy hoppiness - and I mean it really: calling this "fresh" without being sarcastic would be simply being stupid. Again, reality is no match for the legend.

Excellent hazy dark orange look. Shows a nice head that takes its time going away. The light seems to hit it juuust right. No lace. Gives off a well-balanced pub ale smell. Has a great combination of the dry English malt and some flowery hops. Also has that trademarked smoky (steamy) aroma, like a BBQed beer. The flavor is of a terrifically balanced pub ale taste, matching the parallel smells listed above. It does have an additional roasted malt, and more of that smokyness. Biscuity but has a *tiny* bitter finish. It’s slightly thick-feeling but smooth. No bite whatsoever, and thicker than you would think. It’s a substantial ale but with a flowery -- and smoky -- depth. Very very good.

Bottle. Amber with a medium white head. Malty and fruity aroma with hops. Taste of citrus, malt and some caramel. Medium body. A good beer although far from amazing.
