COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

Amber with small head. Light aroma and taste from hops. Body light, texture thin. lively carb. Not much to whissle about.

Bottle poured into shaker. Appearance is a clear copper brown with a finger of off-white head that manages to lace well. The aroma is a simple, no-frills, sweet breadiness that is neither exciting nor bad. The tongue accentuates the caramel flavor but also identifies a lemony flavor from the hops. Finish is subtly bitter. There’s nothing great about this beer, but also nothing objectively wrong with it.

I’ve had this beer about 9 different times and each time have had a different drinking experience. What I’ve discovered is that if you get this beer fresh, it’s incredible. If it’s been sitting on a shelf for a few months it’s just average. Had it once at Dive Bar in NYC and it was a buttery, fruity, smooth pint of liquid amazingness. Other times...not so much

Pours a light copper color, clear and sparkling with a creamy off-white head that clings to glass. The nose is subtle - bread and caramel. The palate is light and smooth, softly carbonated with a short finish. The taste starts lightly sweet and finishes dry and earthy. Overall, the beer is subtle and understated. Drinkable.

Slacks (615) - Bolton, Ontario, CANADA - FEB 13, 2010
12oz Bottle: Pours dark orange, very light streams of carbonation, slightly off-white head about 1/2-inch thick on top. Very sweet, malty aroma of caramel, oranges. The sip is a surprise, a great body with a strong malty flavour providing apricots and a nice, sharp hop bite chaser. It’s refreshing and just lightly complex, no wonder this one’s a classic.

Bottle. I liked the body of this beer. Solid and rich on the palate. Creamy head, pleasant pour. It was bold in its hopp character, both in taste and aroma. Hoppy flavor to start, which mellowed as it lingered into malty caramel and coffee flavors, then ended with a bitter, yet smooth finish. Solid beer, but not one I would miss if I never had again.
