COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

355ml bottle. Pours a fairly clear medium amber, with a smallish off-white head, which lasts fairly well and leaves reasonable lacing. The aroma has strong toffee and caramel malt notes, along with a little candied fruit and lemon hops. Lemon and kaffir lime leaf hops notes up front persist into the mid-palate, where they are joined by toffee and savoury, slightly charry malt notes. Lemon hops make up the finish. This is not a bad beer, but it is a little simplistic.

1 Pt. 6 Fl. Oz. Bottle. Appearance is great, pours a nice clear amber, thick head a nice lacing. Aroma of malts and grain and some caramel. Taste is very sweet and malty caramel mixed with grain and it has a nice mild bitterness towards the end. Good and reliable beer.

Head: beige, medium, frothy, avg. retention. Color: amber, clear. Aroma: persistent and intense caramel, toasted and nutty. Taste: a little caramel, but not really sweet or fruity, moderate to strong bitterness.

Appearance: Dark amber with a strong beige head that settles down to about 5mm and lingers for the whole glass. A small amount of thin lacing down the glass. Aroma: The first thing that came to mind was pineapples and rockmelon, but this was followed by some malt and graininess. Taste: Initially, I actually could taste pears, but this disappeared after a few sips. The rest of it was a bit citrusy (grapefruit & lemon rather than orange) and a bit sharp. Some wholemeal bread and black pepper in the aftertaste. Mouthfeel: Medium carbonation, medium body. A little sharp and ’zingy’ on the middle of the tongue, but not in a bad way. Finish was a bit dry. Drinkability: Well this was my first California Common, and I wasn’t really sure what to expect. Overall, I think that it is a nice drop, one that would go with a lot of different styles of cuisine, but I’m not sure if I would buy it to savour on its own merits.

Cerveja equilibrada, ótimo drikability, destaque para sabores maltados, poderia ter um corpo mais intenso, mas mesmo assim é uma bela cerveja.

Bottle. Pours a clear copper with minimal white head. Settles quickly with no lacing. Aroma is malty, bready, slight caramel/toffee. Flavor is mellow, bread/dough, malt, bread in a bottle. Slight fruitiness and rather mild throughout. Flavor leaves much to be desired and is much milder than I recall. Moderate carbonation, light body, and crisp texture. A mediocre beer.
