Anchor Steam® Beer owes its deep amber color, thick, creamy head, and rich, distinctive flavor to a historic brewing process like none other. It is a process that combines deep respect for craft brewing tradition with many decades of evolution to arrive at a unique approach: a blend of pale and caramel malts, fermentation with lager yeast at warmer ale temperatures in shallow open-air fermenters, and gentle carbonation in our cellars through an all-natural process called kräusening.

Anchor Steam® Beer derives its unusual name from the 19th century when “steam” was a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. While the origin of the name remains shrouded in mystery, it likely relates to the original practice of fermenting the beer on San Francisco’s rooftops in a cool climate. In lieu of ice, the foggy night air naturally cooled the fermenting beer, creating steam off the warm open pans. Once a nickname for any Californian or West Coast beer brewed under these conditions, today the name “steam” is a trademark of Anchor Brewing and applies only to the singular process and taste of our flagship brand - San Francisco’s original Anchor Steam® Beer. The classic of American brewing tradition since 1896.

I digress. The draft I received was not great. I would be unfair to leave a poor rating based upon a single pour from a restaurant where the median age was 50. Not exactly craft beer central station. The bar tender informed me that there would be a delay in giving me the beer because of the tall head and she would add more to the cup after and she hated pouring this beer. She also informed me that this beer is special because it is steamed. Anyways, when I have a bottle I will officially rate it.? ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Pours a clear, orange amber colour with a fluffy cream head. Aroma of herb and grass with a little sweet malt. Taste is grassy, malty, caramel with a nice hoppy finish. Medium bodied and medium carbonated but goes down well. Nice, easy drinking beer.

Bottle. Pours light red color, with small-medium head. In aroma are grass and toast. In flavor also dominates toastiness with some grassines and caramel. Has some character of czech pilsner, but is more bitter. Overall: simple beer, with noy too much complexity. Very drinkable.

Very clear orange color with a medium white foam, pleasant aroma of caramel (eyes closed it seems a bock) with some moderate fruity hints given by the yeast, as moderate is the use of the hop. Medium carbonation, medium body, really well balanced with a bitter and long lasting finish. It’s the fist time I taste a california common so I don’t have any comparison, all I know is that I’d better have bought two bottles instead of one.

An incredible beer. Quaffable, moorish and satisfying. Perfect amount of bitterness.

Amber with an inch and half of medium-coarseness head that fades at a moderate-to-slow rate. Aroma is grass, some lager-yeast notes, light caramel. Flavor is the same with more caramel and a soap/mineral note that is typically found in some English yeasts, on top of slight lager notes. Palate is syrupy-watery, moderate heaviness. Could be lighter. Overall, a nice session, maltier than I had expected.
