Anchor Steam® Beer owes its deep amber color, thick, creamy head, and rich, distinctive flavor to a historic brewing process like none other. It is a process that combines deep respect for craft brewing tradition with many decades of evolution to arrive at a unique approach: a blend of pale and caramel malts, fermentation with lager yeast at warmer ale temperatures in shallow open-air fermenters, and gentle carbonation in our cellars through an all-natural process called kräusening.

Anchor Steam® Beer derives its unusual name from the 19th century when “steam” was a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. While the origin of the name remains shrouded in mystery, it likely relates to the original practice of fermenting the beer on San Francisco’s rooftops in a cool climate. In lieu of ice, the foggy night air naturally cooled the fermenting beer, creating steam off the warm open pans. Once a nickname for any Californian or West Coast beer brewed under these conditions, today the name “steam” is a trademark of Anchor Brewing and applies only to the singular process and taste of our flagship brand - San Francisco’s original Anchor Steam® Beer. The classic of American brewing tradition since 1896.

I digress. The draft I received was not great. I would be unfair to leave a poor rating based upon a single pour from a restaurant where the median age was 50. Not exactly craft beer central station. The bar tender informed me that there would be a delay in giving me the beer because of the tall head and she would add more to the cup after and she hated pouring this beer. She also informed me that this beer is special because it is steamed. Anyways, when I have a bottle I will officially rate it.? ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Nice 3/4" off white head atop a very clear amber brew... lite lacing that dries to crusty bubbles. Aroma is bunches of toasted and caramel malts melting perfectly into earthy hops... few other brews are like it... clean, no yeast esters at all. This beer is dialed in... not really any way I can see to make it better tasting... toasted bread and lite caramel... clean bitterness and malts with a long lingering earthy undertow.

Piwo lekko metne w kolorze ciemny zloty z ladna biala grubopecherzykowa piana. W aromacie nuty kwiatowe i slodowe, jest tez lakki karmel. Nie czuc zadnych aromatow chmieli. W smaku ziolowe bez goryczki z niskim wysyceniem. Bardzo dziwne piwo (moje pierwsze z tego browaru) ktore niestety niezbyt mi smakowalo.

On tap @ Anchor. How have I never rated this? Clear amber colored beer with a finger of white foam. Rich caramel malts along with toasted bread, biscuit, and floral hops. There’s some hints of citrus to go along with it. Much lighter and crisper than I seem to remember and that most other steam beers/California Commons tend to be. While not winning any favor with the beer dork crowd, a true classic and a fine beer.

Alla spina. Limpido color ramato, soffice schiuma biancastra.

Light malty nose with a touch of resin and lemon notes. Medium body with emphasis on the malt and nicely balanced bitterness and sweetness. Hop flavors very reminiscent of English beers. A tour of roasted malt notes. Bitter finish, but not at all harsh. Packs a lot of flavor and body in a 4.9% beer.

pours into a yellowish terracotta with a white head. the aroma is that of fresh grapes but a very weak smell as if anything pleasant you may have got from it was by accident. the flavor is similar to that of your generic lagers, think tuborg. not the most enjoyable beer ive had, probably wont have it again.

Reddish golden. Caramel malt and light hops in both aroma and flavour. Mild and refreshing taste, with light sweetness and a rounded bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with low carbonation. Overall, a good steam beer. Simple, tasty and refreshing.
