COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

Clear golden/amber with white head. Lacings on the side of the glas. Aroma of taste of pilsner malts & easy hops. Quite fresh. Filling texture. Pleasant little bitter finish. OK, but rather ordinary. Easy drinkable...

I gotta be blunt here - I just don’t get it. Here you have an amber ale with a hard body, respectable malt profile and dry finish. Ok, it’s a decent beer, has some flavour and complexity, but it enjoys an absurdly good reputation. It’s just not that special I don’t think.

Bottle. I remember having this years ago. Even had it in The City itself back in 2000. Malty aroma that is quite attractive. Bit over carbonated in mouth with more malt some red fruit and a hoppiness that runs through it, but not as intense as most US beers. Malt is quite biscuity in fact. Finish has a cookie dough feel about it. Prefer both the Liberty and Porter to this. Fine. Nice cookie dough malt, but needs something deeper to be a great beer

Hazelnut brown. Steady medium brown head, lace. Aroma of prunes and berries. Bitter, hoppy and some sweetness. Oily and slightly hoppy aftertaste.

A good beer, but one of the more overrated ones. Decent aroma and flavor, with malt barely outshining hops. Nice amber body with good head. As between the flagships of the two big Cali micros, give me Sierra every time.

Bottle 35,5 cl at home - shared with Mette. Dark amber - white head. Smooth malty, funny (sharp / pointy / crisp) tongue feeling, light hoppy.

UPDATED: JUN 24, 2008 Bottled. Very ligth hazy copper-colored beer with an off-white head. Pleasant aroma with malt, caramel and fruitiness. The flavor has the same elements, along with a piney hoppiness. Sweet, medium body and a bitter finish with some citrus-notes. Rating: 6-3-7-3-14-1.3. (060422)

Bottle. It pours a nice dark golden to copper body, topped by a dense off-white head with good duration. Fine carbonation. It has a quite subtle aroma, caramel and fruits, apple mostly, play the major parts, but there’s also a little maltyness and some metallic notes. It’s quite effervescent, medium body-fullness, and with flavors of apple, pear, caramel, some malt, a little bitterness and some weak metal notes. Quite long finish for a beer of this low alcohol and gentle flavors. Caramel sweetness, some sugar and fruits, and a little touch of metal. It’s a beautiful beer for a drinking session, preferably served slightly colder than my sample, which were at cellar temperature. Maybe it should be lower on carbonation, it could easily affect the sounds coming out of the mouth after a few. (080623)
