COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

An aroma of fruit with a soupçon of yeast. Nice apricot amber color with an enthusiastic white head. Sort of hits with hops and malt all at once. Good mouthfeel. The finish is significant, though not harsh, hoppy bitterness. There’s a bit of lacing on the glass.

Has an ligth amber colour. Nice head. Aroma on this sample was a lillte yeasty. Had a good malty flavour, but wasn’t as complex as i’ve hoped. Nice beer.

Sparkling clear amber ale with a nice, beige head and good lacing. Good and malty. Well-hopped. Good balance. Medium-bodied with a watery mouthfeel and lively carbonation. Short, bitter, crisp finish. The prototype for a lot of great, hoppy, left coast beers. For that, I thank Anchor. Otherwise, it's a fairly boring beer.

Bottle Conditioned, aged 3 years. Amber brown with light head. Deliberately aged which has given it a sweetish sherry like background and a nicely rounded taste. The hoppiness has gone, replaced by toffee notes. Flavour still isn’t full, with a watery finish. Interesting experiment, this was a 4.8% beer initially.

(35.5cl bottle) Hazy, copper colour with a mid-sized off-white foamy head. Light-sweet aroma with an aromatic toasty malt-character with caramel and woody hops. Initially slightly sweet and toasty taste, drying out towards the end; light to medium bodied; bitter and well-hopped finish with a fruity tinge (apricot) and a lasting aftertaste.

red-amber colour, head quickly disappears, slightly fruity, full-bodied with some bitterness in the finish, lack of character - nothing special

Bottle. Pour a dark reddish color with medium head. Aroma has malt and sweet tone. Flavor is much the same with medium sweet and hop finish.

Bottle: Light amber coloured and a bit hazy, small off-white layer; moderate caramelly-bready nose with a slight hoppy and fruity background; moderate sweet-bitter flavour, light to medium bodied; more bitterness in the malty-fruity finish, followed by a hoppy "tail". Pleasant, indeed....

UPDATED: OCT 21, 2005 A Mes rate: Aroma is hoppy, citric and nothing more than reasonable. Cant really pick anything out. Appearance is well worth the 4 and if I took a picture of this right now none of you would argue. Wonderful resin/amber body with a rocky head that lasts well. The way the bubbles settle flowing up into the head after the initial pour was an absolute joy to behold. It is hoppy and nutty and has a most unusual effervesence(sp?) to it. Something that reminds me of alka-seltzer. Also has a very delicate hint of that minty flavour I tasted in the Liberty Ale. Bitter finish. Downable. So so.
