COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
First Brewed: 1896, First Modern Bottling: 1971

Alc. by Volume: 4.9%, Availability: Year-round, Malt: Blend of 2-Row Pale & Caramel, Hops: Northern Brewer

Anchor Steam® Beer owes its deep amber color, thick, creamy head, and rich, distinctive flavor to a historic brewing process like none other. It is a process that combines deep respect for craft brewing tradition with many decades of evolution to arrive at a unique approach: a blend of pale and caramel malts, fermentation with lager yeast at warmer ale temperatures in shallow open-air fermenters, and gentle carbonation in our cellars through an all-natural process called kräusening.

Anchor Steam® Beer derives its unusual name from the 19th century when “steam” was a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. While the origin of the name remains shrouded in mystery, it likely relates to the original practice of fermenting the beer on San Francisco’s rooftops in a cool climate. In lieu of ice, the foggy night air naturally cooled the fermenting beer, creating steam off the warm open pans. Once a nickname for any Californian or West Coast beer brewed under these conditions, today the name “steam” is a trademark of Anchor Brewing and applies only to the singular process and taste of our flagship brand - San Francisco’s original Anchor Steam® Beer. The classic of American brewing tradition since 1896.

Clear orange with massive, lacing head. Peach aromas derived from the yeast along with some caramel and grassy hops. Malt is nicely balanced by a mellow hop profile. Medium carbonation and body. Ends with citrus bitterness. A great beer.

My first experience with a non-national microbrew beer, before the term existed, in 1980s San Francisco. Enjoyed many times since then. Full bodied, malty, but well balanced with hops. Good character.

Pours bright, golden amber with a lot of head. The aroma is malty and rich, and so is the flavor. This beer is dry, slightly citrus, and a little bitter, but the finish is really mellow. It really does have a character that’s a little different from other beers. I like it.

Poured from bottle into pilsner/ lager glass. Clear gold color with thin white head . Smells stale- ish and malty/ yeasty/ lager-y. Tastes like crisp malt/ blandish yeast. Palate is crisp/ fresh/ not too carbonated. Basically, the best of the style (yeah,I know thats subjective).

Bottle. Pour is gold with a small head, aroma is sweet candy. Taste is bitter with light fruity notes in the distance and a bitter finish with light metallic notes. Good

The aroma of toffee and caramel. The taste of toffee, bread and hints of caramel. Good bitterness as not become too heavy. The aftertaste sits most of the time in front of the mouth for a long time. Follow me @ Kung av öl @ Facebook for more pictures and ratings.

Poured from the bottle, this is what beer looks like. Its glowing amber color and thick (!) foamy head provide a backdrop for a soothing upward cascade of bubbles from the bottom of the glass. The malty but crisp aroma presents a nice combination of bready sweetness and mossy bitterness. The flavor likewise exhibits good depth while still being quite drinkable. The must hop profile is more pronounced over the malty base, and there is some tangy yeastiness to add further complexity. The beer is substantial on the tongue but smooth, which once again makes this one flavorful yet drinkable. Overall, there isn’t anything here that isn’t normally found in other beers, but this has some kind of character that makes it stand out.
