COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

Excellent. Nice mouthfeel. Delicious golden head with just the right amount of hop and malt balance. Nice golden color. One of the best ’starter’ beers for a novice beer drinker who wants to get into the better stuff. Not too demanding.

Really really good beer. Just having one reminds me of winter nights spent in North Beach San Francisco watching the fog roll in as I walked unsteadily out of Spec’s and through the tight dirty alleys of Chinatown. It has character.

I shared the soda keg with funk and I could NOT believe how good it was. It is floral and hoppy with almost a banana-like finish to it that makes it unreal. It will also fuck you up beyond belief if you split a soda keg of it.

Kind of a touchstone of the microbrew movement in the US. I think everyone is at least a little bit familiar with the beer, so no need to describe it. I like it.

Light amber beer from a botle, average off-white head that fades away quickly. Sparkling clear. Wonderful aroma of nutty toasted grain, sprucy hops, some grass, cola and apple. Flavor crisp, very clean, smooth and toasty. Low fruitiness, just clean toasty malt with a soft bitterness, balanced toward the malt. Nice tangy hop flavor finishes it up. Moderately dry. A fantastic, underrated ale. Kudos to Mr. Maytag and his team.

UPDATED: JUL 26, 2006 This is a classic American beer. Nutty, hoppy, herby textures form the backdrop for a tasty California Common brew. This great to drink by itself. Some reviewers seem to be comparing it to micro-brews with more hops and malts. This is a steady amber that should drank like a stout. I think it works warmer ... sitting outside the fridge for 1/2 hour or so. Pours real well out of a beautiful bottle.

UPDATED: JUL 23, 2008 Lovely amber colour. Mostly malt in the aroma with a slight hint of hops. Lovely balance of body and bitterness with slightly burnt overtones. Well rounded finish with a superb dry edge. A classic.
