Anchor Steam® Beer owes its deep amber color, thick, creamy head, and rich, distinctive flavor to a historic brewing process like none other. It is a process that combines deep respect for craft brewing tradition with many decades of evolution to arrive at a unique approach: a blend of pale and caramel malts, fermentation with lager yeast at warmer ale temperatures in shallow open-air fermenters, and gentle carbonation in our cellars through an all-natural process called kräusening.

Anchor Steam® Beer derives its unusual name from the 19th century when “steam” was a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. While the origin of the name remains shrouded in mystery, it likely relates to the original practice of fermenting the beer on San Francisco’s rooftops in a cool climate. In lieu of ice, the foggy night air naturally cooled the fermenting beer, creating steam off the warm open pans. Once a nickname for any Californian or West Coast beer brewed under these conditions, today the name “steam” is a trademark of Anchor Brewing and applies only to the singular process and taste of our flagship brand - San Francisco’s original Anchor Steam® Beer. The classic of American brewing tradition since 1896.

I haven’t had this beer in years until today. Pours a nice dark amber, almost orange. Aroma of sweet malt. Taste is crisp, a bit sour, with a bitter aftertaste. A good beer.

Pours in dark orange and with a thick creamy head. What a great malty profile and hop balance in one sip all alone. The malty base is good, the way the hops are used is good. And all put together is amazing. I like traditional stuff and this one’s one of them.

Malty beer brewed with lager yeast at ale temperature. Smell of caramel and Horlicks. Taste of light fruitiness with a pleasant lager like bitterness. Very nice beer.

6packs of 12oz bottles over the years, often sampled at tastings 2012ff. Occasion: 1001 and BL sampler. - Bref: ESB, simplified Franconian Keller and Kölsch meet their hybrid equal in this robust golden sessioner that started it all. Evergreen and classic. - Love the deep bronze, copper hue. Crisp aroma of caramelised barley and whisky malts, ears of barley swaying under a high sun - no real hop aroma, the fruitiness (apricot, wood, unripe banana) seems mostly malt derived. - Pleasant caramel cracker dry mouthfeel, love the natural carbonation here between ungespundet, real ale and old champagne. Nuances of toast in the flavour that keep me going in for another gulp. The bitter Northern Brewer bite is in the tail: fresh hop flowers, crisp caramels pinching the taste buds with a hint of astringent barley husk, dried grasses and nettle, hay, peels of dried fruit, walnuts. Lingering caramelised walnut bitterness. - Easily my favourite CalifCommon (as if there really were another) and a nostalgic reminiscence of when Spéciale Belge was still a style to be reckoned with. - Ref.: Steam > Witkap Special, draught De Coninck, oldschool Palm.

Deep amber with medium offwhite head, decent lacing. Aroma is rather malty, some caramel and toffee, some fruit and spice and resin. Taste is well balanced with some crispy bitterness taking the lead as it progresses. Very velvetty, well balanced beer with enough bite to keep it refreshing.

Pours clear copper with an off white head. Nose is sweet bread and a little zesty hops. Flavor is less rich and leans toward a typical pale lager with just a bit of barley against modest European style hopping. Finish is quick. Decent enough for what it is.
