Commercial Description:
Anchor Summer is the first American wheat beer in modern times. Our first brew of this light and refreshing beer was in the summer of 1984.

Anchor Summer is an all-malt beer, and over 50% of its malt comes from malted wheat. It is fermented with a Triticum aestivum, AKA wheat traditional top-fermenting "ale" yeast because we prefer the clean flavors developed by this yeast. We believe that this style best celebrates the refreshingly light flavor of malted wheat. You may notice that the head on this beer is unusually abundant, with a consistency similar to whipped egg whites. This is due to protein contributed by the wheat.

The brewers at Anchor are proud to have revived not only rich hearty dark beers, but also this light crisp style of a modern American wheat beer.

Wheat malt contributes to an unusual lightness and dryness to the palate, and this—combined with the distinctive flavor of the wheat—makes for a perfect thirst-quenching beverage. It is the ideal drink for beer lovers who appreciate tradition and character in their beer, but also seek a lighter, refreshing style, perfect for warm weather.

Pours bright clear golden with a finger thick white head. The nose is grain and bready malt, aas is the flavor. Light and clean finish.

Bottle. Pours a clear bubbly gold with a large lasting foamy white head. Mild aroma of bready malt, light grassy hops, yeast and wheat. Flavour, also mild, is malty with light grassy hops, a bit of wheat, spicy yeast and some grain -- a little dull, could be more flavourful. Very light bitter finish. Average bodied. Not bad, it’s a fine beer, clean and easy to drink -- it’s just a little too bland for me.

12 oz. bottle purchased at Lukas in Overland Park, KS. Bottle code 8Y9. Pour is clear golden with a nice white head. Aroma of wheat, sour, earthy citrus. Fresh and natural nose. Taste is wheat, sour citrus, hay and earthiness. There were elements of this that reminded me of a Saison. Nice, medium body with a lasting finish. I enjoyed this one.

8/7/08 From the bottle. Aroma is very pils sour, rather than wheat. this dominates the light sweetness and noble hop flora. appearance is clear yellow with a very well maintained fluffy white head. Flavor is simple and sour, with a light pils/wheat blend and moderate noble bittering. Mouthfeel is light bodied with a medium/high carb texture. Overall, this just isn’t very exciting. I’m wondering if this is really an even wheat pils blend, but the description doesn’t say. If it is, the blend seems to rob a lot of the strengths of these malts.

Loaded with character for a wheat beer. Surprisingly amber orange, with a nice thick head you can almost sculpt. Nose was faint, I thought, but nice. Lovely body, malty, with citrus notes subdued but present. Feels good in the mouth. I like this one.

Bottle; orange gold with an average white head. Aroma of wheat, grass, citrus and grain. Flavor was really hit or miss. Had some ok wheat elements and dough. Citrus/grass in the finish. I don’t think it blended to well together. Probably below average for the style.

Bottle. Pours a clear yellow with large white head. Aroma is wheaty and grassy. Flavor is lemony citrus with a good hop bite. Finish is dry and lightly bitter. Wheat character is definitely subtle but present. I’d agree that this is good for warm weather, it’s 109 here and it tastes good to me.

Draft sample offered after the Anchor Brewery tour. Pours a cloudy golden orange color with a decent foamy head. Nice, light aroma and flavor. Very refreshing!
