Commercial Description:
Anchor Summer is the first American wheat beer in modern times. Our first brew of this light and refreshing beer was in the summer of 1984.

Anchor Summer is an all-malt beer, and over 50% of its malt comes from malted wheat. It is fermented with a Triticum aestivum, AKA wheat traditional top-fermenting "ale" yeast because we prefer the clean flavors developed by this yeast. We believe that this style best celebrates the refreshingly light flavor of malted wheat. You may notice that the head on this beer is unusually abundant, with a consistency similar to whipped egg whites. This is due to protein contributed by the wheat.

The brewers at Anchor are proud to have revived not only rich hearty dark beers, but also this light crisp style of a modern American wheat beer.

Wheat malt contributes to an unusual lightness and dryness to the palate, and this—combined with the distinctive flavor of the wheat—makes for a perfect thirst-quenching beverage. It is the ideal drink for beer lovers who appreciate tradition and character in their beer, but also seek a lighter, refreshing style, perfect for warm weather.

Just didn’t really work for me. Not a very easy dinking beer for the style, which I found to be a problem. Light golden color, big white head. Bitter and slightly wheaty taste, maybe a little lemon in the background. Beer had a certain heaviness, that didn’t lend it self to something to quench your thirst on a hot summer day very well.

Meh... nothing special or really spectacular. TOo wheaty for what I wanted at the time, so it was a dampening mood beer at that point. Little hints of the honey mentioned in earlier ratings, lemony in nose as well (somewhat grassy I would presume). (Bottle Pour 2/24/2008)

I was hoping for a little better out of Anchor. Pours a clear gold with a thin white head. The aroma has a little citrus to it and some wheat malt. The flavor is mainly of malt with a little bad citrus spice to it. Weak and not that great, glad I only got one bottle of it.

Bottle. Pours a golden colour with a white head. A bit stale on the nose with a strange cardboard component, also some hoppy citrus fruits. Thin-bodied and watery. Flavour is a bit hoppy without any finesse. Dissappointing

(Bottle) Pours a golden color with a large white head. Light aroma of wheat malts and lemon. Taste is similar, with a strong citrus component. Decent palate for the style. Overall, it isn’t a very exciting beer, but about what I expected.

July 2006 - What a bore. Beer poured crystal clear color nice head and lacing. But that’s about it. Little flavor cold...very little wheat and a slight lemony twang. Got nasty as it warmed, tasting like wheat and cardboard. Carbonated mouthfeel. Like no hops...odd for style. Just dreadfully dull.
