Commercial Description:
Anchor Summer is the first American wheat beer in modern times. Our first brew of this light and refreshing beer was in the summer of 1984.

Anchor Summer is an all-malt beer, and over 50% of its malt comes from malted wheat. It is fermented with a Triticum aestivum, AKA wheat traditional top-fermenting "ale" yeast because we prefer the clean flavors developed by this yeast. We believe that this style best celebrates the refreshingly light flavor of malted wheat. You may notice that the head on this beer is unusually abundant, with a consistency similar to whipped egg whites. This is due to protein contributed by the wheat.

The brewers at Anchor are proud to have revived not only rich hearty dark beers, but also this light crisp style of a modern American wheat beer.

Wheat malt contributes to an unusual lightness and dryness to the palate, and this—combined with the distinctive flavor of the wheat—makes for a perfect thirst-quenching beverage. It is the ideal drink for beer lovers who appreciate tradition and character in their beer, but also seek a lighter, refreshing style, perfect for warm weather.

Bottle picked up from Londis, Goring-on-Thames. Had this 02-02-08 Poured golden with good clarity. This had a nice fresh aroma coming through the white busy head. Found this to be really disappointing, ok so it was reasonably bitter and crisp but so’s a lettuce and this cost twice as much and I was looking forward to this more, better off swigging the balsamic I reckon.

A golden straw color with a thin white head. A little light for my taste, but goes down easy. Crisp and refreshing. Like the name says, if you’re looking for a summer beer this is the one.

On tap fresh at Anchor Brewery, San Fran - June 2007. Clear golden with a thick white head. Some wheat, lemon and citrus in the nose. Flavor has light notes of wheat, lemon zest, grassy noble hops and hay. Medium-light body with lively carbonation. A crisp, drinkin’ beer.

(Bottle) Copper colour with huge, frothy, white head (not very lasting though). Fruity nose with dried fruit (pineapples, mango) and notes of toffee and nuts. Fruity, toasted taste with dried fruit, notes of lemon, toffee and a whiff of slightly metallic bitterness in the short finish. Soft and mellow, summery but rather thin.

Hopped, not much malt. Copper hue. Light bodied. Incredible head - looks like whisked egg white. Perhaps tastes better on a hot day.

Cereal aromas, grainy, wheaty, somewhat sweet aroma. Pours blonde with little to no head. Not much wheat/citrus flavors, very cereal-like, lacking flavor, dry. Not very good. Very dissappointing.

Clear, brass colored with good, foamy white head / Clean, light nose of corn and honey / Light to medium body, a little fat with light carbonation, and balanced with some bitter hopping on the finish / Flavors of corn and wheat with undertones of honey and lemon / Good, but more akin to a pilsner than a wheat.

Orange-yellow color. Lemon Crisp, a little grainy; notceable carbonation. Mild bitterness. [Compared with a Sierra Nevada Wheat and an Issaquah Bullfrog Ale] The Anchor is the most bitter and most crisp. The Sierra is the only sorta buttery one. The Isaaquah is the most aromatic. They all taste pretty similar.
