COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Anchor Summer is the first American wheat beer in modern times. Our first brew of this light and refreshing beer was in the summer of 1984.

Anchor Summer is an all-malt beer, and over 50% of its malt comes from malted wheat. It is fermented with a Triticum aestivum, AKA wheat traditional top-fermenting "ale" yeast because we prefer the clean flavors developed by this yeast. We believe that this style best celebrates the refreshingly light flavor of malted wheat. You may notice that the head on this beer is unusually abundant, with a consistency similar to whipped egg whites. This is due to protein contributed by the wheat.

The brewers at Anchor are proud to have revived not only rich hearty dark beers, but also this light crisp style of a modern American wheat beer.

Wheat malt contributes to an unusual lightness and dryness to the palate, and this—combined with the distinctive flavor of the wheat—makes for a perfect thirst-quenching beverage. It is the ideal drink for beer lovers who appreciate tradition and character in their beer, but also seek a lighter, refreshing style, perfect for warm weather.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Chalice. Bottling date of 1MR (which is March 18, 2011) Appearance: Straw-gold with huge, foamy white head and great lacing. This is a fantastic looking American Wheat, rivaling Hefeweizens. Aroma: Very dry wheat, lemon and light pepper. Taste: Very peppery and wheaty, with light overtones of lemon and orange. Ends spicy and straw-like, with more pepper. Almost too peppery at the finish. Palate: Moderately high carbonation, pretty light body, extremely dry finish. Overall: This is probably the best "American Hefeweizen" I have had. That doesn’t make it the best American Wheat Ale I have had (as it is broad style that includes diverse beers such as Lagunitas Little Sumpin Sumpin, Bell’s Oberon, and Big Sky Trout Slayer), but in terms of the old fashioned American Wheat that are simply Hefeweizens without the German yeast, this is pretty damn good. Most are overly sweet or bland, but this is dry and spicy as hell. Glad I finally tried this, as I put it off as I did not expect much.

Anchor Summer Beer has an incredibly thick, meringue-type head, and a mostly clear, bubbly, yellow-golden appearance. The aroma is a sharp, bready, somewhat sweet smell, and the taste is bready, slightly fruity, sweet, and quite bitter at the back end. The mouthfeel is medium, and Anchor Summer Beer finishes mostly dry and bitter. Overall, this is a very good beer. RJT

12 oz. bottle. Pours a hazy gold with a moderate white head that lasted until mid-glass and left partial lace. Mild aroma of wheat and malt along with a few notes of lemon. The flavor is watered down wheat and malt with again just a hint of lemon. Mild bitterness at the finish. Thin in body. With so many wheat beers out there in the summer, I’d be hard pressed to choose this one a second time.

12 oz draft pours a hazy yellow color with a nice white head. Aromas of wheat, light grass, not a real big nose. Light bodied and easy drinking, but not a whole lot to it

On tap at the brewery, served in a tasting glass. Pours clear straw-golden with a moderate, dense white head and sparkling champagne carbonation. The head remains and leaves a moderate amount of fine lace. On the nose, there is straw, grass and grain, along with fresh flowers and herbs. The flavour is medium dry with slightly sour lemony hops. The finish is long and grainy with bitter earthy hops. On the palate, it is light in body with a dry texture and sparkling carbonation. Overall, this is a decent summer beer with an almost lagerish quality. It is fresh but not terribly interesting. 2011-06-10
