Commercial Description:
Anchor Summer is the first American wheat beer in modern times. Our first brew of this light and refreshing beer was in the summer of 1984.

Anchor Summer is an all-malt beer, and over 50% of its malt comes from malted wheat. It is fermented with a Triticum aestivum, AKA wheat traditional top-fermenting "ale" yeast because we prefer the clean flavors developed by this yeast. We believe that this style best celebrates the refreshingly light flavor of malted wheat. You may notice that the head on this beer is unusually abundant, with a consistency similar to whipped egg whites. This is due to protein contributed by the wheat.

The brewers at Anchor are proud to have revived not only rich hearty dark beers, but also this light crisp style of a modern American wheat beer.

Wheat malt contributes to an unusual lightness and dryness to the palate, and this—combined with the distinctive flavor of the wheat—makes for a perfect thirst-quenching beverage. It is the ideal drink for beer lovers who appreciate tradition and character in their beer, but also seek a lighter, refreshing style, perfect for warm weather.

Bottle poured a golden color with an abundant white head. Seems grainy with some hop bitterness. This beer is certainly not what I have come to expect from Anchor.

Poured slightly cloudy orange with a loost frothy head. Aroma of lightly smoked malt and nuts. Sweet and slightly medicinal on tasting. Seems undercarbonated for the level of sweetness. Decent, but nothing super.

The Anchor range has much to admire but this "Summer Beer" is as memorable as a wet summer in Wales. It ranks alongside the Small Beer at the arse-end of Anchor’s otherwise excellent output. It poured the classic pale gold with a chill haze and a disappointingly short-lived head. No length and no lace. The aroma was my favourite thing about the beer, an intriguing mix of rough-cut marmalade, smoky malt, dried apricots and marzipan. Like the Small Beer, it seems woefully undercarbonated - dull and lifeless in the mouth, thinning notably in the swallow. It felt thin, missing the heft and creaminess of a good wheat. There was a faint American caramel maltiness with dried apricots and a lime cordial-like sourness to the finish. Bit chalky. Overall, very unsatisfying. A weak link in the range. (355ml bottle from Purvis Cellars, Melbourne; best before May 2007)

Pours like a pale ale with a full spritzy froth. Aroma has a touch of bisciut. Light nectar with ample residual effers. Flavors are very crisp, clean, and skunky. It’s so crisp it’s almost acidic. Not my choice for a session brew.

aroma is nothing special but it’s appearance makes up for it. a slightly hoppy bitterness with twist of citrus and goes down smooth. didn’t quite meet my expectations ... being an anchor beer i was hoping for something a little bit more.

If this beer tasted and smelled as good as it looked, then we’d be talking about something here. Beautiful golden color and a full, lasting head. Unfortunately the flavor and aroma are uninspiring. Not bad, but not great.

Bottle at GBBF 2006. Lasting cream head. Bit of herb, bit of grainy aroma. Not a lot of body, fizzy. Drinkable but dull. Bit of lemon citrus on end.

Bottled – GBBF. A golden coloured beer with an off-white veil of a head. The aroma is a little sweet and sickly and fairly dull. The taste is just plain boring. Nothing much happening, just slips down without any character. No noticeable wheat character and no noticeable hop. Boring.
