Commercial Description:
Anchor Summer is the first American wheat beer in modern times. Our first brew of this light and refreshing beer was in the summer of 1984.

Anchor Summer is an all-malt beer, and over 50% of its malt comes from malted wheat. It is fermented with a Triticum aestivum, AKA wheat traditional top-fermenting "ale" yeast because we prefer the clean flavors developed by this yeast. We believe that this style best celebrates the refreshingly light flavor of malted wheat. You may notice that the head on this beer is unusually abundant, with a consistency similar to whipped egg whites. This is due to protein contributed by the wheat.

The brewers at Anchor are proud to have revived not only rich hearty dark beers, but also this light crisp style of a modern American wheat beer.

Wheat malt contributes to an unusual lightness and dryness to the palate, and this—combined with the distinctive flavor of the wheat—makes for a perfect thirst-quenching beverage. It is the ideal drink for beer lovers who appreciate tradition and character in their beer, but also seek a lighter, refreshing style, perfect for warm weather.

Aromas of grass, honey, floral, etc. maybe a bit of corn lurking in the background... Pour is golden and clear with a minimal white head. Flavor is sweet. Honey is a flavor that I detect right away, but there is also that corn-like tone, too... Definitely has floral tones to it and is refreshing, but maybe could be a little less sweet and a little more crisp to polish its thirst quenching abilities.

Very yellow in appearance with not much white head. Nice flowery aroma. Flavor doesn’t live up to the aroma, however. Very mild wheat flavor, quite unimpressive. Easy to drink but thin mouthfeel and disappointing flavor won’t make me buy it again.

Bottle (12oz). Poured clear gold with a large fizzy-foamy white lasting head, decent lacing. Bready aroma right out of the bottle, on closer inspection it’s a little sharp with acidic lemon overpowering a light wheaty malt base, but still appealing. The taste is simple, a decent balance between grainy malt and sharp lightly peppery yeasty bitterness, not very much fruit character though. Watery start, lightly syrupy, nicely carbonated, quick finishing and no aftertaste - I have no complaint about this one, for an American Wheat it’s quite easy to drink.

12oz bottle: Pours a very translucent non-clouby yellow color. Big white head, somewhat lasting. Very malty aroma, slight acidic aroma, effervescent. Smooth malty taste, not skunky, not nutty. Refreshing.

I can agree that this summer ale is a bit filling, but it still is a nice beer on a hot day. You just can’t drink a ton of it.

Tasted in Toronto. Obtained on a tipr to Boulder Colorado. Tasted in Dimple mug. Appearance is medium golden / yellow colour. Medium white cumulous head, lots of carbonation bubbles rising in the glass. Aroma is slightly sweet with grassy / grainy notes and hints or wheat and sweet corn. Flavour is sweet with a very thin mouthfeel. Ends slightly bitter and in general is not very complex or satisfying.

It does it job on a nice hot day...which is 100f right now in san antonio. Not a typical wheat beer.
