Commercial Description:
Anchor Summer is the first American wheat beer in modern times. Our first brew of this light and refreshing beer was in the summer of 1984.

Anchor Summer is an all-malt beer, and over 50% of its malt comes from malted wheat. It is fermented with a Triticum aestivum, AKA wheat traditional top-fermenting "ale" yeast because we prefer the clean flavors developed by this yeast. We believe that this style best celebrates the refreshingly light flavor of malted wheat. You may notice that the head on this beer is unusually abundant, with a consistency similar to whipped egg whites. This is due to protein contributed by the wheat.

The brewers at Anchor are proud to have revived not only rich hearty dark beers, but also this light crisp style of a modern American wheat beer.

Wheat malt contributes to an unusual lightness and dryness to the palate, and this—combined with the distinctive flavor of the wheat—makes for a perfect thirst-quenching beverage. It is the ideal drink for beer lovers who appreciate tradition and character in their beer, but also seek a lighter, refreshing style, perfect for warm weather.

12 oz. bottle Aroma: Perhaps the most interesting part of this beer, it was light cereal with lemongrass and other citrus. Moderately hoppy with an odd scent of rubber band underneath everything. Appearance: Light golden in color with not much of a head. Flavor: Much like the scent suggested it was somewhat thin and reminded me a lot of many White beers I have had with that light cereal malt taste overpowering the lemon. Palate: Somewhat more bitter at the finish than I expected given the scent and taste. Overall: Normally I would say that Anchor Brewing Company is one that I find I enjoy quite a bit even though it is not considered by most to be quite top notch brew. This is one where I understand where they were going with it but there is plenty of room for added complexity. Not terrible by any stretch but not all that interesting either.

Somewhat hazy golden-orange, with a nice thick white head. Wheat aroma, with suprisingly little citrus or fruity aroma. Very light, with not a lot of malted wheat flavor. Has a nice level of hops, but not a lot of flavor. Good finish, with a solid mouthfeel.

12 oz bottle. Deep golden colour, thick lasting white head. Very faint wheaty aroma, a bit of apple and pear. Mouthfeel is very thin, slightly sweet pale and wheat malts, a hint of fruity apple flavour. Low hopping and some light breadiness going in to the finish. Even a bit of banana. Would be better with a fuller body, but I’ve had worse.

A pretty light American wheat designed for the summer. Color wasn’t impressive, nor was the head. The aroma was somewhat lemon-like with the wheat hayish type aroma. The mouthfeel was pretty light, but the flavor balanced and refreshing. Good summer activity beer that I enjoyed while playing volleyball.

The aroma is really pleasant, not quite what I think aobut in a wheat beer, but grassy, somewhat fruity, color is very clear, flavor is not great, kind of flat and a little too bitter, no hint of juniper in this one.

Bottle. Downgraded from June 2006. This year this beer did not strike me as special in any particular way. As a matter of fact, I agree with the site in-general that this is a below-average American Wheat. This year I found it fizzy instead of creamy; bland instead of flavorful; lacked nuance or character. Apple fell far from the tree.

The best way to describe this beer is Budweiser meets Sam Adams Summertime. Total waste of time.
