ALLOVATE (1126), Perth, Australia Feb 16, 2006 A classic example of a generally bland beer-style. Not to say there aren’t some definitive versions out there, but this just wasn’t one of them. Tasted from the bottle into a stein-glass, chilled from the fridge. Appeared to be a pale lager in the glass. Bright medium gold body; well charged in carbonation with a persistent, fluffy white head that left some legs. Slightly vinous, dry, grainy nose with some musty yeast notes and sourdough. Thin in the mouth, crisply carbonated and all-round lager-like in feel. Wholemeal, husky grains dominate with a light lemon tang before drying out in the back and finishing short. Faintest hint of pepper and freshly mowed grass begins to linger between swallows and doesn’t quite save it. Have to agree with Sully, this one just seemed like the Euro-lager equivalent of a wheat beer. Bland!!! (355mL, 4.5%ABV, BBE 05/07) Sully (1367), Woolloomooloo, New South Wales, Australia Jan 17, 2006 Wheat beers can be quite deceivingly different. The German and Belgian styles have an assertiveness all of their own and while they are for acqired tastes they maintain their integrity. This seems to be a beer that attempts to satisfy without offense. The colour is pale golden and the head in the glass quite creamy. The nose is dumb with a hint of citrus and fleeting spiines. The flavour profile follows suit with a definite cabonation but no body or balance to counter this unpleasantness. I guess it is an American perogative to name a beer in this way and so suggest that it is equally their choice to enjoy it. But not me. NoiZe (1288), Mooi Zeist, Netherlands Jan 10, 2006 A very fresh aroma, a bit yeasty, grainy. Flavor is light, especially for 4.5%. Citrus like, but overall not too much interesting flavors. RooftopRogue (423), Champaign, Illinois, USA Jan 2, 2006 This beer greets the nose with an aroma of yeast and citrus. It is a solution the color of beeswax and only has a mere glaze of foam covering its crown. This beer offers the palate an infusion of wheat and yeast. It is mildly bitter and the mild carbonation leaves the mouth tingling from the introduction to the swallow. oldrtybastrd (1801), Morlautern, Germany/Great Falls, Montana, USA Dec 28, 2005 Pours a hazy golden yellow. Aromas of bread, fruit and spices. Flavors of fruit, malt and some hints of spice. thedm (3833), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA Dec 26, 2005 This bottled brew poured a large sized head of foamy fine to large sized mostly lasting white colored bubbles that left behind a good lacing. The body contained average carbonation, was transparent and yellow in color. Its aroma contained notes of hoppy doughy corn mild bready nice BEER aroma. Its mouth feel is tingly smooth mildly hopped with a palate and a aftertaste. Its flavor contained good malt hop standard lager flavor notes. A gret example of the style. bluevegie (2169), Perth, Australia Dec 25, 2005 Yellowy urine looking body with a poor head. Taste is not too offensive just nothing bloody flash at all. Couldn’t always pick this as a wheat beer and perhaps that is why it an American Wheat.
ElGaucho (1730), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Dec 20, 2005 Draught at brewery. This beer was a bonus as I thought I had rated it, but hadn’t and because it was being served at the brewery tap room in December despite the fact that it is a summer beer. Lager aroma with some detergent and some fruit. Clear gold in color with some visible carbonation and a small, white head. Very nice lace. Very light bodied. I considered it a pale lager more than an American wheat, and as such, I felt it had slightly more flavor than your average pale lager. Really did not appear overly wheaty. Nice, doughy finish. I can see this being a nice summer refresher, but even as such, too innocuous.
