Commercial Description:
Anchor Summer is the first American wheat beer in modern times. Our first brew of this light and refreshing beer was in the summer of 1984.

Anchor Summer is an all-malt beer, and over 50% of its malt comes from malted wheat. It is fermented with a Triticum aestivum, AKA wheat traditional top-fermenting "ale" yeast because we prefer the clean flavors developed by this yeast. We believe that this style best celebrates the refreshingly light flavor of malted wheat. You may notice that the head on this beer is unusually abundant, with a consistency similar to whipped egg whites. This is due to protein contributed by the wheat.

The brewers at Anchor are proud to have revived not only rich hearty dark beers, but also this light crisp style of a modern American wheat beer.

Wheat malt contributes to an unusual lightness and dryness to the palate, and this—combined with the distinctive flavor of the wheat—makes for a perfect thirst-quenching beverage. It is the ideal drink for beer lovers who appreciate tradition and character in their beer, but also seek a lighter, refreshing style, perfect for warm weather.

12 oz bottle from Bello Vino in Ann Arbor, Mi. Brassy golden hue, smallish lasting wisp of head...sour mash in the nose upfront, hints of white pepper appear, unremarkable...the body is something different, very refreshing, surprisingly creamy and smooth, full, with sourness prominent upfront and towards the finish...center is milky-creamy, grassy and fresh with warm sourdough. Lovely, not a disappointment at all from this great brewery.

Pours clear pale lager like golden. Filmy white head fades fast. Skunkiness abound. Aroma and flavor dominated by the skunk. Some swetness in the finish. Don’t get any wheat character out of this whatsoever.

Bottle. Pale yellow, smells citrusy, lightly hopped, and a little malty. Tastes pretty watery and bland with a kind of funky finish. Not great.

this one wasn’t great at all. I thought it would have had a better flavor., but not so much. Very bland and very dissappointing

On draught. Tasted during trip to California. Golden clear colour with a nice creamy head. Some hoppy nose. And very easy drinking taste. Some wheat and flowor in it too. Very little bitter.

Beer pours a light golden color. The head is about a quarter inch, but fades before I even take a taste, contrary to what the label says. The beer smells sweet and slightly malty to me. A moderate malt flavor comes through first followed by a refreshing hop finish that doesn’t linger too long on the tongue. Mouthfeel is clean, crisp and just heavy enough without being heavy. Drinkability of this beer is just above average. I would expect just a little less malt in a summer beer. There is no lacing to speak of as I drink the beer down. This would not be my first choice for a beer while grilling in the summer, but I wouldn’t turn one down if it were given to me.

(12 oz bottle: Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido, CA) I’ve had this once before, but the bottle wasn’t fresh, so here’s a new review with a bottle that was purchased _today_ at the county’s best beer store. Even still, this beer comes across as a slightly above average American Wheat beer to me, which is disappointing for an Anchor product. The nose is entirely grass, wheat, and light citrus. Pretty flavorful wheat maltiness is minimally sweet, and balanced by a mild, citrusy hops. Light bodied, of course, but not watery in the least. Light golden color is very slightly hazy. The white head pours to a pretty sizeable height, but gradually settles to a wide ring. Some strands of lace remain behind on the glass. This beer is okay, but I guess I’m just not a fan of this style, and much prefer a true German hefeweizen to this boring American style.

One bottle from BOTW. Not much of a head. Slight citrus aroma and flavor. A light and crisp beer. I’ll have it again. Had this one after closing my pool for the season.
