Commercial Description:
Anchor Summer is the first American wheat beer in modern times. Our first brew of this light and refreshing beer was in the summer of 1984.

Anchor Summer is an all-malt beer, and over 50% of its malt comes from malted wheat. It is fermented with a Triticum aestivum, AKA wheat traditional top-fermenting "ale" yeast because we prefer the clean flavors developed by this yeast. We believe that this style best celebrates the refreshingly light flavor of malted wheat. You may notice that the head on this beer is unusually abundant, with a consistency similar to whipped egg whites. This is due to protein contributed by the wheat.

The brewers at Anchor are proud to have revived not only rich hearty dark beers, but also this light crisp style of a modern American wheat beer.

Wheat malt contributes to an unusual lightness and dryness to the palate, and this—combined with the distinctive flavor of the wheat—makes for a perfect thirst-quenching beverage. It is the ideal drink for beer lovers who appreciate tradition and character in their beer, but also seek a lighter, refreshing style, perfect for warm weather.

The bottle poured a light amber clear beer with an ample rocky white head that dissipated to a thin white head that then lasted throughout. It left nice lacing on the glass. The aroma was of wheat and malt with some notes of American hops. The body was medium with medium carbonation. The texture was dry and grainy. The flavor starts off with a slight wheat sourness and a bit of a bitter bite at the back of the tongue. The middle becomes dry and a bit tart while the finish is medium in length, dry and a little bitter.

Bottle, from Julio’s. Good nose, sweet. Wheat, lemon, sourdough, banana. Clean yellowy gold color, small head that faded quickly. Like aroma with lemon 1st, wheat 2cd others from there. Medium body, lite creamy mouthfeel, crisp tart finish. Nice summer brew. One I will tell people to try.

Thanks to DMeyers69. Sugary and sweet aroma. Toffee and caramel, orange essence. Light fruity hops and some sweet bread. Golden amber clear with some haze, topped with a white foamy lacing head. Medium watery body with very high carbonation, almost like soda or selzer. Starts with mild malt sweetness. Bland toffee and very light orange. Bit of spice that I can’t quite place. Carbonic acidity. Light wheat flavor, too. Finish is medium bitter with wheaty citrus after, though fairly clean.

Not a winner. Not bad mind you, but not one I’d come back to. Aroma is very wheat /yeast, with very little else. Light yellow appearance. Label talks about abundant head, but I saw none. Flavor is all wheat, with very little depth. Easy on the mouth, though almost too easy, as it has a watery consistency. Again, not a bad beer, but closer to Coors than to Rogue.

This is a great summer beer and not really too much to think about. Just sit back and enjoy.
