Commercial Description:
Anchor Summer is the first American wheat beer in modern times. Our first brew of this light and refreshing beer was in the summer of 1984.

Anchor Summer is an all-malt beer, and over 50% of its malt comes from malted wheat. It is fermented with a Triticum aestivum, AKA wheat traditional top-fermenting "ale" yeast because we prefer the clean flavors developed by this yeast. We believe that this style best celebrates the refreshingly light flavor of malted wheat. You may notice that the head on this beer is unusually abundant, with a consistency similar to whipped egg whites. This is due to protein contributed by the wheat.

The brewers at Anchor are proud to have revived not only rich hearty dark beers, but also this light crisp style of a modern American wheat beer.

Wheat malt contributes to an unusual lightness and dryness to the palate, and this—combined with the distinctive flavor of the wheat—makes for a perfect thirst-quenching beverage. It is the ideal drink for beer lovers who appreciate tradition and character in their beer, but also seek a lighter, refreshing style, perfect for warm weather.

12 oz bottle: Light gold w/ a short lived white head. Thin, sporadic lacing around the top of the beer. Clean, wheat malt aroma w/ a nice grainy malt profile. No hops and no fruitiness... Pretty clean aroma. Flavor is well balanced w/ wheat malt flavor. A bit of grainy flavor as well which starts a bit sweet, but finishes a bit on the semi dry side and very crisp flavor. Clean of fruitiness and flaws. Highly carbonated, carbonated, dry m/f...prickly. Not a bad wheat at all. Very clean and a great lawnmower beer.

Bottle. Spicy, peppery adjunct-like aroma/ I don’t really smell many wheat characteristics. Mildly sweet aroma. Transparent golden color with a fluffy white head. Starts somewhat sour and astringent with lemony hints. A bit of metallic flavor in the middle. Finishes malty and milky in a way. Grassy sweet flavors throughout. This is an easy-drinking summer beer, but doesn’t really have as much wheat as I expected. A bit disappointing, yet drinkable.

Bottle: Aroma is grassy with a hint of flowery hops. Pours a transparent gold with a small white head. Looks more like a pilsner than a wheat beer. Very light malt up front with a lightly grassy and flowery hopped finish. Only the slightest hint of spice. Fizzy mouthfeel. A pretty weak attempt at a wheat beer.

12 oz bottle - Pours golden with a short white head. Aroma is of light citrus and some yeast. Flavor is nothing overwhelming. Light wheat, citrus, yeast. Not a lot. On the palate this is light and a nice summer ale. Refreshing and crisp.

Short white head on a gold body. Fruity and wheaty, good as a summer drink, very drinkable and refreshing. I am glad I tested it.

Wheaty and lemony flavors dominate this beer. It is okay, but definitely not up to Anchor’s usual standards. Very little head on this beer. The flavor just doesn’t do it for me. Very average as far as summer beers go.

Smell is wheay funkiness. Head is nothingness and dry. Why make wheat beers why? And why do I buy them - just to rate them I guess.

Draft. Light crisp appearance without no clouds. Don’t let the light appearance fool you. I like this beer. Nose was refreshing quenching citrus and pine floral notes. Some grainy bread yeast. Overall it sort of let me down as it didnt hit me with the punch of wheat and citrus a real good summer ale delivers.
