Commercial Description:
Anchor Summer is the first American wheat beer in modern times. Our first brew of this light and refreshing beer was in the summer of 1984.

Anchor Summer is an all-malt beer, and over 50% of its malt comes from malted wheat. It is fermented with a Triticum aestivum, AKA wheat traditional top-fermenting "ale" yeast because we prefer the clean flavors developed by this yeast. We believe that this style best celebrates the refreshingly light flavor of malted wheat. You may notice that the head on this beer is unusually abundant, with a consistency similar to whipped egg whites. This is due to protein contributed by the wheat.

The brewers at Anchor are proud to have revived not only rich hearty dark beers, but also this light crisp style of a modern American wheat beer.

Wheat malt contributes to an unusual lightness and dryness to the palate, and this—combined with the distinctive flavor of the wheat—makes for a perfect thirst-quenching beverage. It is the ideal drink for beer lovers who appreciate tradition and character in their beer, but also seek a lighter, refreshing style, perfect for warm weather.

A pale yellow gold color with white tinges. Frothy protein heavy head. Familiar fruity sour aroma with hints of earthiness. Very wheaty, almost straw-like texture and flavor, characteristic of a filtered wheat beer. Shallow, bitter, and grassy mouthfeel, particularly noticable in the finish. Rather medicore as far as wheats go, I feel that it would benefit from not being so vigorously filtered. The yeast would round out the less desirable taste components.

Rather a so-so wheat, golden with a rocky head that coats the glass in chunky suds as you drink. The aroma is crisp and clean, grassy with a bit of citric sourness. This is reflected in the flavor along with the addition of a slightly bitter finish.

Pours like liquid gold. I detected a very prominent malt presence-- much more so than usual for a wheat. Well, I read the label after the first taste and, whaddayaknow- malted wheat. Very light, slightly crisp, and definitely worth drinking on a hot summer day.

Pours a yellowish colour, has a citrusy aroma. It has a very crisp and refreshing taste, certainly a great session brew, and one that is not limited only to the beer geezers of the world.

sweet and tangy nose. light, lemony, wheaty, smooth, and highly quaffable. this could make a decent session brew, but there’s a dry and dusty aftertaste i don’t care for--i’d rather have something that wets and lures me in for more.

Bottle. Poured a medium white foamy head that mostly diminished, fine-medium sized bubbles, carbonated, and a straw yellow hue. Aroma was malty, sweet and some spicy notes. The flavor was sweet, malty, wheat, fresh, and crisp. Tingly mouthfeel. Light-medium body. Nicely done IMO. Very quaffable.
