Commercial Description:
Anchor Summer is the first American wheat beer in modern times. Our first brew of this light and refreshing beer was in the summer of 1984.

Anchor Summer is an all-malt beer, and over 50% of its malt comes from malted wheat. It is fermented with a Triticum aestivum, AKA wheat traditional top-fermenting "ale" yeast because we prefer the clean flavors developed by this yeast. We believe that this style best celebrates the refreshingly light flavor of malted wheat. You may notice that the head on this beer is unusually abundant, with a consistency similar to whipped egg whites. This is due to protein contributed by the wheat.

The brewers at Anchor are proud to have revived not only rich hearty dark beers, but also this light crisp style of a modern American wheat beer.

Wheat malt contributes to an unusual lightness and dryness to the palate, and this—combined with the distinctive flavor of the wheat—makes for a perfect thirst-quenching beverage. It is the ideal drink for beer lovers who appreciate tradition and character in their beer, but also seek a lighter, refreshing style, perfect for warm weather.

Ordinary to insipid looking medium yellow amber clear with a smallish short lasting white head. Light wiff of fruity casdcade on opening bottle rapidly disappearing to a plasdticene grainy malt. Thin watery lightly carbonated palate. Flavour is mild malt sweet, light stale hops and a hint of the sour bitter lemon sodaa. Aftertaste is light stale bitter. This style is definitely not my thing

Bottle poured yellow with a thick white head and good lacing. Aroma was grassy and light. Flavor of mild hopps with a bitter finish. This would be a good summer beer hence the name.

OK, I should have known what to expect as soon as I saw the screw top cap. Poured a lovely gold, but head vanished almost immediately. Looked like a summer wheat beer but without the intensity of flavor I expected. Little lemon zest, no pepper, no spice. Good bitterness, good refreshing beer. Not something I would seek out again ... there are too many better beers that are much easier to get!

Bottle. Medium golden pour with decent white head. Faint aroma, but definite notes of honey as well as wheat and some malt. Slight lemony bite to it, but overall tastes like a honeyed lager. A bit unremarkable, but easy to drink and not offensive. Eat it with a hamburger and be happy you’re not drinking Bud.

Batch number on bottle is 6UO, for what it’s worth. Beer is clear, light, bright pumpkin-orange colored with a small, white, frothy, mostly, rapidly and totally diminishing head. The aroma is really yeasty with moderate-to-heavy notes of dough, light note of basement; Malty with light note of slightly husky toasted grain, trace of caramel; Hoppy with light notes of lemon zest and a lesser note of grass. The flavor is lightly sweet, moderately-to-heavily acidic, lightly bitter/dry with an average-length, lightly sweet, moderately acidic/slightly astringent, lightly bitter finish. The body is light, the texture is watery and the carbonation is fizzy.

Bottle. Pours hazy gold, white head. Aroma is malty and sugary. Flavor is malty with some hoppiness. This is not really my thing, although it’s not terribly bad for the genre. You know, ratebeer should have 2 indexes per rating, one for subjective, and the other for genre.

Bottle: I was not very impressed with this beer. This is the only bad beer I’ve tried from Achor Brewing Company. Aroma: cereal, grains bland. Flavor: bread, watery, slight lemon and cardboard. Easy to drink, but there are so many better summer American Wheat beers out there.
