willblake (1913), Long Branch, New Jersey, USA Apr 28, 2008 20080428 12oz bottle. What the heck - I’ve never rated this. Good thing it’s pretty drinkable stuff because I just spent something crazy like nine bucks on a six-pack. The mind was thinking Sierra Nevada summer and I ended up with Anchor. Had no idea either that this beer was an American wheat. You don’t say? Well, it’s a clean golden pour with aggressively lacing fine white head. Aroma is peppery, lagery, at first a bit citrus/lemony but that dissipates right quick. Lefty just farted and it’s completely obnoxious - one of her best. Body is medium to light with an even, refreshing eff, and a mid-palate to finishing tartness. Reminds me of the ubiquitous American brewpub ’golden ale’ and just maybe this is the ancestor. There’s definitely some resemblance but, as with most of Anchor’s stuff, this is obviously more refined and made in earnest - even if it is kind of boring. Finishes tart, juicy, refreshing, but I’m not in love with the flavor overall. Eh.
BeerEssential (72), Massachusetts, USA Jul 4, 2008 I had this a month or two ago but forgot to rate it, so this is from memory. I’ve come to realize that American wheat beers are not necessarily unfiltered and bottle conditioned like their European cousins. This started out as an almost completely clear golden colour with a nice fluffy head, but the head quickly disappeared, but left some lacing. There wasn’t as much spicy, citrusy aroma as some German versions. Taste was along the lines of a lager. Not my cup of tea (or glass of beer), esp when compared to Belgian or German wheats, but obviously a style all it’s own that appeals to a greater audience. Drinkable, but unmemorable. ilovedarkbeer (683), Dallas, Texas, USA Jul 2, 2008 Pours a very ugly yellow color with a medium sized soapy white head that quickly turns into a ring around the glass. Nose is sour wheat, cardboard, and corn. Taste is very grain like and somewhat harsh on the palate. A bit of a lemon zest and grass finish. Moderate mouthfeel. scraff (1602), Baltimore, Maryland, USA Jul 1, 2008 Sparkling gold, creamy white head. Faint grassy citrus aromas warm to lighter notes of earthed wheat bread. Soft citric wheat flavors finish with a quick drying faint apple note. Light bodied with moderate carbonation. I can greatly appreciate lighter summer style beers, but this was was just bland and weak... WesKBob (116), Bethany, Oklahoma, USA Jul 1, 2008 Pours a cloudy reddish yellow color. Mild wheaty aroma. Flavor is similarly weak, with some breadlike notes and maybe just a hint of spice. Smooth mouthfeel. A decent lawnmower beer, but nothing really special. zebracakes (952), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 30, 2008 Bottle. Pours hazy gold, white head. Aroma is malty and sugary. Flavor is malty with some hoppiness. This is not really my thing, although it’s not terribly bad for the genre.
You know, ratebeer should have 2 indexes per rating, one for subjective, and the other for genre.
