COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Anchor Steam’s® roots go back to the Gold Rush, long before icehouses and modern refrigeration made traditional lagers a viable California option. In 1876, thanks to an ice pond in the mountains and a belief that anything is possible in the Golden State, a little brewery named Boca created California’s first genuine lager. Anchor California Lager® is our re-creation of this historic American beer. Made in San Francisco with two-row California barley, Cluster hops (the premier hop in 19th-century California), and our own lager yeast, this all-malt brew is kräusened and lagered in our cellars. Its golden color, distinctive aroma, creamy head, balanced depth of flavor, and smooth finish make Anchor California Lager® a delicious celebration of California’s unique craft brewing heritage. The California grizzly bear on our Anchor California Lager® label is from a woodcut by Durbin Van Vleck (1833–1898), courtesy of The Bancroft Library, UC Berkeley. First published in 1856 in San Francisco, it is a superbly crafted rendering of an original illustration by Charles Christian Nahl (1818–1878), who had painted both eastbound and westbound versions of this bear. Nearly a century later, Nahl’s bear served as inspiration for the design of the bear on California’s modern state flag. Although that bear is heading west, our bear—like the bear on Boca Brewing’s historic lager label—is heading east.

Poured from bottle, great looking label, high hopes for a brewery I often enjoy. Aroma is very faint, color is pale, taste is quite weak, palette is smooth...not watery but flavor is so light and just mediocre. Disappointed. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Another tepid entry from Anchor. Don't get me wrong-it's not bad. It's just kinda bland. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

From can, pours a light amber with miimal head. Aroma of grains, slight bready malt and a touch of hop. Not too sweet with good dry bitterness. Overal a pretty good pale lager!

Aroma of apples. Quite fruity and estery for a lager. Smooth creamed corn in the finish. Floral hop bitterness rounds it out. Not sweet but not overly dry. Very drinkable and flavorful for a pale lager. I’d tend to prefer something like this to have more noticeable notes of grains involved, but this is pretty good for a crisp light drinker if you’re not in the mood for a hop bomb. It does a lot of the same things that Anchor Steam Beer does well, but I guess I’d take one of those if given the choice.

The California Lager is good and leaves one feeling satisfied. It is rare that a beer without much flare so thoroughly surprised me in a positive sense. Usually US beers tend to disappoint, especially when titles a lager. This beer however is tasty, drinkable and has a good aftertaste to go. Very good.

355ml can from Tesco. Served cold from the fridge as befits a beer drunk for refreshment. There is a pleasant fruitiness to this which suggests a more active yeast than is commonly used in lagers, or perhaps the temperature was slightly hotter during fermentation, or they didn’t ferment out fully. Whatever, it’s nice to get some malt character in a lager. The old fashioned hop, Cluster, is my kind of hop. Balanced and restrained and subtle. It is earthy and floral and fruity - bringing in a dusty and thirst-quenching bitterness, but also imparting a bright thin fruit, which complements and enhances the fruitiness of the malt. This beer doesn’t taste American at all - this is like something from Syria or Africa. It has a wild and wonderful crudeness and character and genuine flavour. It tastes of beer, not of hops, and the malt is rough and complex and quite delightful. I haven’t enjoyed a lager this much for ages. Not that I’m getting carried away, but I certainly would be interested in trying this again at a warmer temperature to see what it really tastes like.

Golden, perfectly clear, tiny white head. Malty aroma, with a bit of esters, and a touch of hopy fruits. Taste is rather clear, malty with very light bitterness. Refreshing, crisp, quite clear in taste. It’s ok, nothing super exciting.

Bottle. Pours deep golden with foamy white head. Aroma of grassy hops and rich maltiness. Nice bitterness for a lager.
