Our California Lager is also a single-hop beer, using only fresh, whole Cluster hops, all descended from an old line originally grown in California. Cluster has a long history as a “dual-purpose hop” for both bittering and aroma, which creates a flavor profile like no other. Brewed with San Francisco tap water, fresh from Yosemite, and fermented with our own special strain of lager yeast, our California Lager is kräusened in the traditional manner and lagered in our cellars. The result is a uniquely sessionable lager beer, which is maltier, hoppier, and somewhat stronger than modern American lagers. Its brilliant golden color, lingering effervescence, balanced depth of flavor, distinctive aroma, and smooth finish make this inaugural brew of the Anchor Brewing Zymaster™ Series a delightful tribute to the rich heritage and traditions of California brewing.

Decent, but feels bit too thin even after “Latvian nothing special” . Nice malty base, caramel, light toast, bit grassy hops. Feels silky, bit watery aftertaste. Decent, but nothing to remember or try again

Can. Deep amber colored body with plenty of carbonation bubbles. Dense off white head. Nose of dough and oranges. I also get hints of carrot. Flavors of raw dough and oranges are present. Bits of carrots are also part of the grainy flavor. Overall, a tasty and slightly sweet brew.

A bit more hefty than other craft lagers, this brew is a relatively more full flavored and full bodied example of the style. Pours a golden yellow appearance with proportionate head and lacing. Aroma is noble hops and sweet maltiness. Flavor is likewise light hoppiness and biscuit malt, a bit too much malty sweetness for my taste. A bit too thick on the palate also. Interesting but not my favorite lager rendition.

Pours a clear medium yellow with a white head that leaves lacing. Nose is cereal. Body is medium. Taste is malt with a slight sweetness with hop bitterness that lingers. 12 oz bottle

A soft pour from the can into my globe glass produces a three-finger thick, light tan colored head; the head is quite dense, and has lots of staying power, including leaving some lacing patterns on the sides of my glass. The beer is a nice golden copper hue that shows a clear, bright golden hue when held up to the light. The aroma is hop dominant, though the overall effect is low; notes of black currants, a slight metallic hop character, grassy herbal notes, and a touch of menthol are all noticeable. The hop aromatics are backed by cracker leaning, with just a touch of English biscuit maltiness.

Nicely balanced between malt and hop in the flavor, the beer has a nice clean flavor to it, except towards the finish where the hop character has an herbal, sort of metallic edge to it that is nice. The bitterness is nicely bitting from beginning to end, and this balances the light, chewy, cracker / bread like malt sweetness that is here. Touches of menthol, a bit of black currant, with a grassy herbal character, and even a touch of bright citrus zest round out the hop notes here. The body has a touch of viscosity to it that provides some palate heft, yet is still eminently quaffable, just as it should be.

This is a really nice beer, not sure why I am enjoying this so much, but it tastes fresh, clean, and vibrant. It actually is doing better than any Anchor Steam I can find in Arizona; somehow this seems fresher and has traveled better.

Bottle to lager glass. Straw gold, lively and retaining head, no lacing. Nose of biscuit, spice, skunk, mild hop. Flavor is hay with some very mild floral hop, dry, watery body. Not an off-putting lager.

Bottle from M&S, 15/09/15. Clear golden with a well appointed off white covering that retains well. Nose is caramel, straw, light bread, apple tree, grain, cereal. Taste comprises popcorn, caramel, light vanilla, corn, cereal, bread dough. Medium bodied, soft massaging carbonation, semi drying close with a pinch of bitterness. Solid lager.

Excessivement léger et désaltérant. Quelque chose de pourri dans cette bière... mais je suis sûrement trop mauvaise langue... Très bonne brasserie au demeurant.Mais là peu à dire. Du houblon simcoe ? Je le reconnais ;)
