COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our California Lager is also a single-hop beer, using only fresh, whole Cluster hops, all descended from an old line originally grown in California. Cluster has a long history as a “dual-purpose hop” for both bittering and aroma, which creates a flavor profile like no other. Brewed with San Francisco tap water, fresh from Yosemite, and fermented with our own special strain of lager yeast, our California Lager is kräusened in the traditional manner and lagered in our cellars. The result is a uniquely sessionable lager beer, which is maltier, hoppier, and somewhat stronger than modern American lagers. Its brilliant golden color, lingering effervescence, balanced depth of flavor, distinctive aroma, and smooth finish make this inaugural brew of the Anchor Brewing Zymaster™ Series a delightful tribute to the rich heritage and traditions of California brewing.

Rustic hop bitterness under the cap, more like a Northern Brewer. Foams up a lot when poured into my Sam Adams glass. Just a tad darker than the usual pale lager color, while most old-time lagers (Juengling, Sam) tend to be darker. That slight oxidation that comes with most light lagers. Taste is both highly bittered from that "all-purpose hop," and a bit sweet. If they used a truly historical 2-row barley, they might have had to amp it up with adjunct. An interesting beer, but it’s a little too close to a Pabst for me.

Pours a straw golden with light golden tints. Head is white and a bit rocky and maintains a thin layer for quite some time. Aromas of grass, basement, bread, minor orange citrus, sweetness of malts. Mouthfeel is bright at first but quickly mellows into a creamy texture with a nice lingering finish. Clean and creamy great with spiced foods.

Average lager with a full malty profile but lacking the crisp, clean character that would have made this interesting. Not bad, but rather boring.

Can. Dark golden appearance with a medium to small head. Aroma was grains, just a tad of a hoppy aroma. Taste was very well balanced with a really nice up front flavor and a crisp refreshing finish.

0,355 l bottle. Dark golden and clear in the glass. Small foamy white head. Low citrus and grain on the nose. Starts with a fresh hopy note for a Lager. Little bit citrus, little bit malt and grain. Pleasant malty bitterness, low roasted. Complex for a Lager. Enjoyed it a lot!

355ml bottle from Appellation Wines. Pours clear gold, thick white head. Aromas have light vegetal notes, grainy hay and light lemon. Taste is more of the same, light saccharine sweetness. Finishes a bit thin for me, but not bad.

Bottle from Appellation Wines. Appearance - golden amber with a decent head. Nose - creamy malt with only the faintest hint of citrus. Taste - more citrus this time and fairly well intermingled with the malt. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy texture and then a decent dry finish. Overall - i think this is very much in a helles style. It’s more about decent balance than spectacular taste.

Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance – The beer pours a golden amber color with a two finger head of just off-white colored head. The head has a good level of retention, slowly fading to leave a fantastic level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the beer is light overall with just some hints of a bready and graininess mixed with a very small amount of a floral and grassy hops. Taste – The taste begins a mix of a drier cracker and bready taste as well as a little bit of a caramel and floral flavors. The caramel fades more and more as the taste advances with a bit more of a floral hop and some grassy notes taking its place. Some graininess and a slight hay-like flavor join the taste profile at the end, leaving one with a very crisp and dry, but rather clean taste to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer quite thin with a carbonation level that is a little on the higher side. Both are perfect for the lighter abv. and very crisp flavors of the brew, making for a nice easy drinking lager., Overall – Crisp, crackery and somewhat moderately hopped for a lager. This is a nice summer time brew with a good flavor, but having a quite refreshing taste and feel.
