COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Anchor Steam’s® roots go back to the Gold Rush, long before icehouses and modern refrigeration made traditional lagers a viable California option. In 1876, thanks to an ice pond in the mountains and a belief that anything is possible in the Golden State, a little brewery named Boca created California’s first genuine lager. Anchor California Lager® is our re-creation of this historic American beer. Made in San Francisco with two-row California barley, Cluster hops (the premier hop in 19th-century California), and our own lager yeast, this all-malt brew is kräusened and lagered in our cellars. Its golden color, distinctive aroma, creamy head, balanced depth of flavor, and smooth finish make Anchor California Lager® a delicious celebration of California’s unique craft brewing heritage. The California grizzly bear on our Anchor California Lager® label is from a woodcut by Durbin Van Vleck (1833–1898), courtesy of The Bancroft Library, UC Berkeley. First published in 1856 in San Francisco, it is a superbly crafted rendering of an original illustration by Charles Christian Nahl (1818–1878), who had painted both eastbound and westbound versions of this bear. Nearly a century later, Nahl’s bear served as inspiration for the design of the bear on California’s modern state flag. Although that bear is heading west, our bear—like the bear on Boca Brewing’s historic lager label—is heading east.

Rustic hop bitterness under the cap, more like a Northern Brewer. Foams up a lot when poured into my Sam Adams glass. Just a tad darker than the usual pale lager color, while most old-time lagers (Juengling, Sam) tend to be darker. That slight oxidation that comes with most light lagers. Taste is both highly bittered from that "all-purpose hop," and a bit sweet. If they used a truly historical 2-row barley, they might have had to amp it up with adjunct. An interesting beer, but it’s a little too close to a Pabst for me.

Can, from the Cali mix pack. Golden copper color with a modest eggshell head, aroma of sweet lager malt and grass. A bit herbal too. Tastes sweet, bready and lightly floral. Crisp enough too. Not bad.

Can at home. Minimal aroma. Good carbonation - nice balance of softness and fizz.. Pours clear pale gold with foamy head. Crisp, slightly sweet, but dry finish. Has some depth to it. A good lager, nice balance of sweet and dry.

Escaso aroma, muy similar al sabor. Color típico de rubia con pequeña corona de espuma blanca. Carbonatación media tirando a baja. Sabor similar al de la Liberty Ale pero con menor personalidad. Si la hubiera probado sin saber que es Anchor... jamás lo hubiera dicho. No es mala pero es algo plana, sin mucho matiz. Disfrutable y refrescante, pero pido más.

Tasted on a hit day after a bike ridr. Pours golden clear, almost white fluffy head. Aroma is flowery, bready, hay. Taste is nice balance of doughy malt and sp8cy, but not bitter hops. Tasty, not overpowering. Crisp, refreshing, well carbonated. This is what a pale lager should be.

Täysin kirkas, keskiruskea, aavistuksen punertava olut keskikokoisella valkoisella vaahdolla. Tuoksu on reilun maltainen, aavistuksen ruohoinen ja hyvin vähäisesti hedelmäinen. Maussa samoin maltaisuutta, aavistus hedelmää ja kevyesti ruohoa. Keskitäyteläinen suutuntuma. Nousee aavistuksen peruslagereiden yläpuolelle, mutta ihan laadukas.

Rated on 7-20-2016 (Can) This beer’s appearance is a medium sized fizzy off-white head that mostly diminished, golden transparent body with fast rising carbonation observed, and spotty amounts of lacing. The aroma presents light hops, lightly grassy, floral hops, sweet, herbal, bread, and malt. This beer’s flavor presents light bitterness, light hops, lightly herbal, bread, malt, and a dry finish. The mouthfeel is light carbonation and this beer is light-medium bodied. A very quaffable session beer that is easy drinking.

UPDATED: JUL 15, 2016 BB Feb 2018, pretty fresh. Flowery hops lavendar on the nose. Fruity and crisp with a nice biscuit twist at the end. Subsequent sips are more and more bitter. Starts like a sweeter Dortmunder but ends like a dry and floral pils. Cool beer actually surprised at how good it is. A fantastic session beer.

35,5cl bottle from MS Viking XPRS. Pours clear golden with a white head. Mild hoppy and malty aroma with lightly fruity and grassy notes. Moderate sweet with mild, but rather nice and balanced hoppy and malty flavours and a certain bitterness in the finish. Plain, but balanced and rather tasty. Sessionable.

Can. I have a cold, so the nose is distorted: malty, hint of bourbony grain (odd might be me), grass, cereal. Taste is malty, grain, hint of bourbon, very light chocolate, bits of banana, cereal, grass. Pleasing dry finish Very nice for a larger and with (relative) subtlety and depth.
