Daniel Wheeler’s invention of black “patent” malt in 1817 had made higher-alcohol black beers a relative cinch to make. In the ensuing years, the grain bill for London stouts evolved toward a blend of pale, brown, and black malts, while the Dublin brewers preferred the drier flavors that resulted from using just pale and black malts in the mash. “Some portion of the Irish brewers, and those who rank among the most celebrated,” Tizard asserted, “form their grist of pale and best black malt only.” In this regard, Anchor brewmaster Mark Carpenter’s recipe for our export stout (7.4% ABV) is more Dublin-style than London-style, which helps distinguish this black-as-night brew from our Anchor Porter (5.6% ABV). Our grain bill for Flying Cloud San Francisco Stout includes Maris Otter pale, two black malts, and flaked barley. Goldings hops provides the perfect complement to the dry, dark-chocolately flavors from the malt. And now this export stout, inspired by the stouts shipped around Cape Horn to San Francisco in the 1850s, ships—with delightful irony—to London, allowing our Anchor Brewery to return the 164-year-old favor!

Keg at bow bar. Soft fruity chocolate nose, taste is rich chocolate, dry finish, fruity, something else-liquorice/aniseed maybe.

From notes, dark, very dark in appearance, dark chocolate, mild hops, somewhat unbalanced. Still an interesting brew.

Draft @ GABF 2013. Pours a black color with a small tan head. Has a roasted malty chocolate aroma. Roasted malty chocolate and caramel flavor. Has a roasted malty chocolate finish with hints of caramel.

Tap at Dada, Sheffield. Almost black, dirty, tan, lasting head. Aroma has a dark chocolate maltiness. Some ripe plum fruitiness. A hint of caramel sweetness too. Taste is a dark chocolate, roasty dryness. Oily, slightly chewy palate. Tart, dry finish.

Pour on tap at Black Bottle, dark brownish black pour with creamy tan head, aroma brought notes of roast, dark cocoa, chocolate, hints of roast, slight spice, earth notes in there, touch of grain. Taste is a nice mi of grain, biscuit and caramel with roast, lots of chocolate, and coffee, touch of spice, finishing fairly bitter, dry. Nice.

On draft at Sunset Grill. Pours deep dark black with a brown head. Big malty aroma. Thick oily mouthfeel. Tons of dark chocolate, coffee and licorice flavors. Delicious.

Keg at the Bow Bar Edinburgh. Now THIS is a stout. Jet black with tight tan head. Chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, touch of cooked Victoria plums. Bitterness from the black malt, sweetness coming through at the end. Creamy, soft carbonation, medium to full bodied. Excellent beer.
