Our Fort Ross Farmhouse Ale (7.2% ABV) is a Belgian-style farmhouse ale with a California twist. The unique bitterness and earthy spiciness of Yerba Santa, a native California herb, perfectly complement the fruitiness and clove-like flavors created by a local saison-style yeast. And in addition to hops, barley malt, and wheat malt, we used toasted Belgian wheat malt, which gives our Fort Ross Farmhouse Ale its distinctive maltiness and burnished bronze color.

Zymaster Series No. 4: Fort Ross Farmhouse Ale will be available in draught and 22-ounce bottles and will be poured in select bars and restaurants throughout the United States, as well as the Anchor Taproom, starting June 2013.

22oz bottle. Deep bronze color. Beautiful pour, with taste white foam. Why does Anchor’s have so much flavor & character?? Aroma is very herbal, sweet toasted malts, and the obvious fresh-baked bread. Flavor had fruity esters, sweet malts, toasted barley character. Finishes with a little bitterness, herbal bite. Saison breadiness is definitely there . Sticky texture. Hardy bodied. Very gassy, light fizz, gentle carbonation. Pretty strong for a "Farmhouse" Ale, just right for a Saison. Should’ve poured this into a Duval glass. Overall, I’m not a fan of Saison/ Farmhouse Ales, but this one is absolutely fantastic. $7.49 @ HopCity. (3775).

Bottle. Poured a hazy orange-brown color with a very large white head. Aroma was malty notes, caramel and a touch of yeast notes. Flavor was heavy caramel malts, spices, very weak yeast notes. Too malty and not enough yeast character - reminds me more of a malty British brown ale.

On draft at The Olde Depot. It pours a deep golden orange color with a thick, creamy off white head. The aroma is sweet and malty with some apple fruit and a mild cinnamon like spice. The flavor is more apple and stronger notes of spice… a bit more peppery and earthy although I wouldn’t necessarily call this a "farmhouse" beer. Surprisingly, it has a very high bitterness in the finish that is characteristic of most Anchor beers (Northern Brewer hops?) Full bodied with more spices and bitterness in the finish.

Fancy squat 22oz bottle pours with a clear deep copper body that supports a thin near white head. The aroma offers up apricot, red apple, coriander like spices and plum. The taste is similar with smooth yeasty spice infused fruitiness. It gets more and more yeast Saison spices and yeastiness to midway as coriander and cloves and other spices continue to linger deep into the taste experience. Plenty of yeasty spices and fruitiness here.

Very nice bronze color with ample, fluffy, tight tan foam, settling rather gradually. I smell lemon, grass, biscuit, and some barnyard funk. Semi-sweet, malty, bitter and twangy... I get some dunkelweiss aspects like the sweet notes and rich, roastyness, but also just a bit of a kick of acidic brightness. Hops linger for a bit on the tongue. I will attribute the mildly vegetal and unplaceable bitterness to the Yerba Santa. It makes for a unique brew, but I’m not sure it plays well with others in recipe.

On tap. Clear orange copper with a lasting film of cream. Nose of funk, white grape, spicy resin. Taste is earthy spiced grape, light funk, resin and citrus. Light-medium body has medium-high, but smooth, carbonation and is well balanced with a dry toasty finish.
