Our Fort Ross Farmhouse Ale (7.2% ABV) is a Belgian-style farmhouse ale with a California twist. The unique bitterness and earthy spiciness of Yerba Santa, a native California herb, perfectly complement the fruitiness and clove-like flavors created by a local saison-style yeast. And in addition to hops, barley malt, and wheat malt, we used toasted Belgian wheat malt, which gives our Fort Ross Farmhouse Ale its distinctive maltiness and burnished bronze color.

Zymaster Series No. 4: Fort Ross Farmhouse Ale will be available in draught and 22-ounce bottles and will be poured in select bars and restaurants throughout the United States, as well as the Anchor Taproom, starting June 2013.

Pours a clear, bronzy amber with a fluffy and rather persistent buff head. Malty aroma has a fruity underpinning and more than a hint of hops. Refreshing flavor has malty, hoppy and fruity notes, minimal bitterness and sweetness, mostly just good ol’ beer. Texture is firm, smooth, and rather fizzy, leaving a hoppy and fruity finish.

Sample at Yard House Seattle. The beer pours a clear dark amber color with a medium off-white head that dissipates steadily to a film. Toasted malt and fruit in the nose. Medium-bodied with flavors of roast malt, ripe fruit and herbal yeast. The finish is fruity with an earthy yeast aftertaste. Decent overall.

Amber with thin offwhite lacy head; soft sweet sugary aroma; Flava is sweet and spicy with notes of clove and nutmeg, and the sweetness is well balanced with the spiciness and they intermingle brilliantly the sweetness gives notes of maple?...; feels light crisp with nice fizz; finishes dry and bitter and somewhat sticky;

Bottle. Brown sugar, lemon and malt aroma. Amber with small head. Mildly sweet brown sugar malt and lightly bitter herbal flavor. Nice body. Not a typical saison - still tasty though.

Bottle. Pours a clear orangish amber with a tan head that lasts throughout the beer and laces thickly. Aroma has note of bready grains with a bit of floral yeast and a touch of wheat. Flavor starts with light sweet fruits and has a finish of floral, belgian yeast and a good amount of cookie.

Brass and copper penny pour with a small ivory crown. Caramel, toffee, and a slight fruitiness accompanied some biscuit, honey, malt, and yeast. Medium mouthfeel. Enjoyable but not earth-shattering.

Tap at Redlight. Hazy yellow pour with a bubbly white head. Mostly yeasty and fruity aroma with estery notes. Flavor is much sweeter than expected with mostly yeast dominance and sweet wheat grains. Not bad but not what I was expecting.

Pine Box, Brooklyn tap ($6): Pours orange with a white head. Aroma is Belgian yeast and fruitiness. Taste is actually somewhat bitter. It is also pretty sweet, but not really excessively so. Generally good balance. Not really dry or funky like a saison should be. In any case, it was a perfectly good Belgian inspired American ale.
