COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Fort Ross Farmhouse Ale (7.2% ABV) is a Belgian-style farmhouse ale with a California twist. The unique bitterness and earthy spiciness of Yerba Santa, a native California herb, perfectly complement the fruitiness and clove-like flavors created by a local saison-style yeast. And in addition to hops, barley malt, and wheat malt, we used toasted Belgian wheat malt, which gives our Fort Ross Farmhouse Ale its distinctive maltiness and burnished bronze color.

Zymaster Series No. 4: Fort Ross Farmhouse Ale will be available in draught and 22-ounce bottles and will be poured in select bars and restaurants throughout the United States, as well as the Anchor Taproom, starting June 2013.

Bottle from Muckey’s. Poured into a tulip. A hazy light amber with a frothy lacy head. Aroma of earth and fruit. Flavor is unique - herb and pepper. Some clove. Nice fruity yeast and light sweet malts. Goes down smooth. tart bubblegum finish. A very interesting brew.

Looks nice. A light fruit aroma. This is very fruity on the second sip. First sip is light and bubbly. A surprisingly dry finish but fruity throughout. Strange. Okay.

Bottle:   Amber, thin foamy white head, little lacing, light carbonation.   Somewhat of a sweet sweaty aroma, slightly rustic, a bit barnish, but not as floral as other saisons.   Soft breadiness on the tongue, light sweetness, touch of caramel and biscuit.   Seems more of a rustic amber than a Saison.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Finishes mealy, bready, and nothing like I expected for a Saison.   Not bright and floral like others.   Not bad, but not what I expected at all.

651 ml. bottle. Pours a thick, tiny bubbled, well retained, ivory head, with extensive lacing, over a clear, dark amber (SRM 15) body......nose is heavy cereal, hints of toffee/caramel from the malts, mild herbs from the hops, hints of clove from the yeast......taste is heavy sweetness, with light hints of toffee/caramel plus cereal from the malts, mild herbs, with light finishing bitterness from the hops, light clove, hints of lemon, earth from the adjuncts.....mouth feel medium, sticky, no astringency, carbonation low, with a mild acid finish. Although this is a beer, it really isn’t a Saison. It is heavily sweet throughout, lacks acidity, has low carbonation after the initial burst, is a bit high in alcohol and the phenolic are wrong being clove, rather than pepper in direction. A bad attempt from a usually good brewery. BJCP 6/3/10/4/5

Draft at Bailey Taproom in Portland, OR on 31 May 2013. Copper colour with a medium, but dense white head. Great aroma of Belgian yeast, spice, soft fruits and a vague floral hop note. Flavours of bready malts, dry hay and peppery spice. Finishes with earthy, grass flavours and a touch of caramel sweetness.
