Our Fort Ross Farmhouse Ale (7.2% ABV) is a Belgian-style farmhouse ale with a California twist. The unique bitterness and earthy spiciness of Yerba Santa, a native California herb, perfectly complement the fruitiness and clove-like flavors created by a local saison-style yeast. And in addition to hops, barley malt, and wheat malt, we used toasted Belgian wheat malt, which gives our Fort Ross Farmhouse Ale its distinctive maltiness and burnished bronze color.

Zymaster Series No. 4: Fort Ross Farmhouse Ale will be available in draught and 22-ounce bottles and will be poured in select bars and restaurants throughout the United States, as well as the Anchor Taproom, starting June 2013.

Golden amber with a thick white head that quickly dissipates. Aroma is funky hay somewhat like a barnyard. Flavor is light, almost seems like an Anchor Steam was forced to be a saison somehow. It’s missing some of the sparkling effervescence I would expect and it’s a little muddy and flat. Leaves a slight bitter finish that is a little unpleasant. Wife: 3.2

Bomber I guess. Wow. Really cool fat boy bottle. Pours a wonderful reddish copper color with a medium white head. Very sweet yeasty and candied fruit nose. Rich flavor of caramel, toffee, some candied Christmas cherries, a bit of yeast and banana. Excellent brew. I’m not sure exactly why, but this really came together really well for me. Almost like a English Strong Ale or BW.

Bottle. Sweet and sour malty aroma. Clear deep copper with a minimal head. Toasty malt, yeast, and light clove flavor.. Body on the light side of medium, soft carbonation. Doesn’t taste anything like a saison.

Bottling date: May 17 2013.

Appearance: Pours a lightly hazed, dingy copper-hued body with a smallish, wispy, off-white head.

Smell: Blended fruit notes, fragrant spices, and sweet-scented elements atop a bit of light toast, a bit of cookie.

Taste: Bready pale malts, restrained wheat maltiness. Rock candy sweetness. Teensy taste of marmalade, a nibble of apple. Touch of banana. Variety of peppery spices (star anise, clove), light bitterness. Rolls back and forth between the sweetness and spiciness while sustaining the fruitiness throughout. Crispish finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium-plus carbonation.

Overall: A beer that is ultimately just okay.

Appearance: cloudy amber-gold, thin white head of soapy bubbles. Aroma: honeyed cracker grains, yeasty spice, notes of clove, coriander, sage, citrus, and banana. Taste: as the aroma indicates, with a slight spicy bitterness the most prevalent. Finish: dry, slightly herbal, a little bitter, with a spicy zing that lingers. Notes: This is a properly decent saison. Flavors are a little spicy, but in a way that complements the light palate. On draft at Victoria’s Gastro Pub in Columbia, MD.

On tap at Beer Temple. Deep golden colour, white head. Aroma of banana, spice, bubblegum, very much like Leffe Blonde. Flavour is light spicy, sweet banana, esters, bittersweet finish. Light-bodied. Not great.

From tap at Beer Temple. Pours hazy amber with a medium off-white head. Aroma is a bit yeasty, spicy and slighty fruity. Taste is quite sweet with spices, some malts and a bit of yeast. Medium body and carbo. Decent.

Tap @ Beer Temple, Amsterdam. Pours a hale orange with a good, off-white head. Aroma is like a Belgian blond. Fruity with apple. Taste is a different matter. Caramel, fairly sweet, a lot of spiciness. Caraway, light coriander, earthy. Sticky, a bit light, good carbonation.

Copper-amber with huge, foamy, white head, wet lacing / Musty nose of toasted grain, honey, light citrus / Light to medium body, thin, lightly sour, mostly dry with bitter finish / Simple flavors of toasted grain with notes of honey, banana, and citrus / Nothing particularly Belgian about this very uninspiring ale.
