UPDATED: APR 10, 2014 750 ml bottle from Chuckís.

Man, Anchorage gets all of the cool collaborations. Corked and caged 750 opens with nary a puff; the beer pours a dark murky brown with a hint of white head. The aroma is rich and complex and an unusual combination to say the least. Cherries and balsamic like a Flanders red, oak and a booziness that with a little imagination I can attribute to the cognac barrels, intense cobwebbiness of a mouldering stone basement, and a candied grapefruit new school hops thing that comes way out of left field for the style but somehow makes sense coming out of Anchorage. Fascinating combination. Itís really a glorious aroma -- but I donít have the patience to sit around and sniff -- itís on the first sip.

My first reaction to the sip, after becoming accustomed to high-alcohol sour reds like Aardmonk and the De Dolle Reservas, is that this is (1) not nearly as cuttingly sour, (2) much less aggressively tongue-dryingly tannic (3) much less chewy and (4) much less alcoholic, despite the cognac nose. All of these co-conspire to make it (5) far more quaffable than it has any right to be. One sip in and Iím very glad to have an entire 750 of it to myself. Not a common sentiment with the relatively challenging Anchorage brews, and all the less so with the stronger Belgian reds. None of the chloroform off-flavor exemplified by the Duchess that bothers me so in about half of the beers of this style. Enough vomit-abit-in-the-mouth flavor to give it street cred but not enough to make one question oneís sensibility in enjoying it. Despite the limited carbonation, thereís nothing lacking in the mouthfeel. Carbonation is spot on, and while the beer isnít heavy on the tongue like the bigger Flanders reds, this seems to work to the advantage of the beer as a whole. (Aside -- this should be listed as a Sour Red/Brown, not a Sour/Wild Ale.)

Just when I was starting to wonder if I was over-rating Anchorage based on some sick personal Brett fetish, they come along and really nailed this one.

tl;dr summary: They threw the kitchen sink at this one, but it spontaneously self-assembled into something beautiful.

Wow. Just wow. Got fer my lady for her 27th. Drank at Prosperity. You couldnít pair two more of my new favorite breweries, and then they pair up, and create this beautiful monster. I mean, this beauty had cognac dripped elements of sour barnyard funk blowing up at you, but politely for fuckís sake! Oh by the way, this is rating................1600!!!!

Light muddy brown, etched thin bubbled ring. Stewed peaches and boozy burnt toffee apple. Itchy yeast vibe, terse sweetness throughout cuts through the sourness. Rich and patient woodyness throughout spreads the bretty dusting. Finishes really raking tart and cherry. Linger is surprisingly clean.

Bottle, Fancy Al Fresco Tasting, Cheers BenHhhhh

Corked and caged 750 ml bottle from Tipples. Pours brown with a half finger khaki colored head. Aroma of green apples, wood, balsamic, some interesting booze notes, twigs and leaves and vegetal notes. Interesting I guess but a little strange. Flavor is light sour black cherries with a hefty bit of dry oakiness, some booze that I assume is the cognac, and a lingering mellow cherry apple vanilla flavor left on the palate. Fruity notes begin coming out from the cognac with additional sips. Medium plus mouthfeel for a sour, with low carbonation--but not flat by any means. A very good sour in the red/brown style.
