Bottle thanks to Bursprak! Pours a hazy golden-orange with a big, white head. Aroma has tart, dry grapefruit, lots of white pepper, dry saison yeast spices, funk. Taste is dry, slightly acidic and citrus peel fruity, very spicy and surprisingly juicy. High carbonation and a nice, crisp, juicy body. Better than the JP version!

Holy Brett! Calabaza isn’t an easy beer to love. It packs hoppy and juicy bitterness, hoppy and yeasty earthiness, spiciness, dankness, and woodsiness into one place. The big element is good ol’ Brettanomyces. It’s no secret that Anchorage loves the stuff. The funk-loving minds at Jolly Pumpkin make for ideal bedfellows in this collaboration. It shows. Calabaza drinks like a tribute to the brewer’s bacteria. All the added flavors seem to be put in place for the sole reason of enhancing the yeast. Basically, it you don’t like Brett you’ve been warned to stay away. In this form (bottled December 2014), Calabaza is a bacterial monster.

Bottle. A- Sour, funky, lemon juice. A- Yellow color, cloudy liquid, white head. T- Sour, funky, tart, rancid yogurt, pool water. P- Light body, average texture, average carbonation, funky finish. O- Do any beers from Anchorage taste like anything but hardcore funky Brett? I am 3-0 for overpowered beers that taste like nothing described on the bottles and are full of funky Brett. No thanks. I wanted this one mostly for the bottle but I think I am done with Anchorage for a while. I wanted loads of grapefruit and peppercorns and nada smidge of either.
