Draught @ CBC2013. A total of 3 samples. Pours slightly hazy deep amberish copper with a small brownish golden head that quickly dissipates without leaving any trace on the glass. Smell is sweet and malty with biscuits, caramel, toffee, charred wood, raisins, figs, prunes, cognac, roasted nuts, alcohol, moist tobacco and hints of cocoa powder. taste is sweet and malty with biscuits, caramel, toffee, sweet dark bread, cognac, charred wood, vanilla fudge, raisins, figs, prunes, roasted nuts, hay, moist tobacco and hints of dried cherries and dark chocolate. Mouthfeel is round, smooth, boozy and full bodied. Finish is sweet and very tiny fruity tart with biscuits, caramel, sweet dark bread, raisins, figs, prunes, roasted nuts, charred wood and hints of cognac. Served way to old but as it warmed up the beer revealed itself to be a wonderful, dense, incredibly heavy barley wine. Intense and with a sting of cognac but the 17% are nowhere to be found which makes this a very deceptive beer.

On tap @ Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2013. A monster! It’s somewhat clear and deep red-brown in the glass this one. A bit anonymous on the nose at first, so better let it breathe for a while. A while later; oh yeah, lots of sweet dark fudge and caramel here. Not even a hint of the alcohol, but it’s really deep complex and concentrated this. Figs, dates and other sweet dried fruits, some cocoa traces and a strong big good amount of cherry. Mmhhh.. Really nice! Loaded with flavors also, and here you’ll most definitely items can sense the alcohol. Yo can actually almost see and touch it as well. Sticky and concentrated in the mouth with a soft prickling carbonation level. Loaded with dark fruits and some cough syrup. Slightly salty also in a way, a dry the cherry is definitely present the in the taste as well. Lots of taste, perhaps a bit to much? Is that even possible? 03.05.2013

22 oz bottle consumed at my 8th and possibly last US Open/Father’s Day weekend barleywine tasting. Deep crimson brown with beige froth. Nose is caramel, brandy, raisin and dates. Sticky medium to full body with a buzz. Taste is brandy, caramel, raisin, oak and citrus peel. Simple base brew allows the cognac to shine.

Bottle (Batch 1, December 2013) shared at ChurchKey. Dark brown with off-white head. Aromas of cognac, caramel, toffee. Tasting notes of caramel, light cognac, toffee, maybe some candied fruit. Medium body with a dry finish. Low carbonation, syrupy mouthfeel. Very smooth for 17% ABV!

This is really just a mess. It’s cloudy brown and headless aside from a few stray bubbles. It’s pretty mild in the nose, slightly fruity w/ a touch of coconut. This is thick and sticky sweet w/ a sort of pretzel-like malt character and not much else aside from raisins and some tobacco-ish oxidized malt. I am not sure why someone would want to drink this.

Pour from bottle at What the Funk!? 2014. Appearance is glowing caramel with no head - good alcohol legs. Big fig, oak, raisins, chocolatey, caramel, rich brown sugar, toffee, candi sugar, and brandy in the aroma. Smells amazing. Taste is rich plum, wood, bourbon, grapey, caramel, brown sugar, cognac, and vanilla with no signs of the high ABV. Slick mouthfeel with soft cabronation. Such a rich and beautifully executed beer. Like drinking a glass of brandy.

On tap at anchorage brewing. What’s this monster beer doing on tap at the end of the aisle of barrels?!... Pours a deep mahogany, mostly opaque, must dark brown hue... Rich toffee and caramel nose, dark fruits, raisins, molasses and a clear and present cognac barrel presence. Full and sweet, dessert-like and delectable... Flavors encompass a deep rooted toffee and caramel nougat focus that pair immediately with boozy fruit cake, dark fruit and the ilk. Barrel is smooth and cognac adds a mild sweet spirit aspect that meshes quite nicely. Full bodied, touch sticky with a lighter level of carbonation that matches naturally with the aformentioned... Really incredible all around. Excellent sipper to be enjoyed in small amounts.

Vanilla, milky caramel, slightly nutty (hints of hazelnut), gets more complex as it warms. Cloudy brown color, bubbly beige head. Sugary and sweet, dates, honey, dark fruits in the background, real toffee in the finish. Complex and delightfully drinkable. Nearly cloying and warming, but no alcohol can be tasted at all. Full body, smooth and milky, slightly creamy. This is definitely a dangerous beer. It?s truly a "deal with the devil."

Sampled at the W&C Clayton. It poured a deep brown color with an off-white head. The aroma was of rich malts, some oak, dark fruits, cognac and a touch of hops. The taste was of caramel, toffee, oak, cognac, raisins and other dark fruits with a lot of some booze. Awesome.

Large shared bottle. Spicy and dark fruit notes in the nose. Hints of brandy. Body seems a bit light but is fairly smooth for ABV. A bit boozy in the finish.
