From bottle @ The Festival. Hazy caramel color with a low beige head and little to no lacing. Aroma is of cognac, wood, toffee, caramel, alcohol, vanilla and fruity notes. Taste is moderately to heavily sweet with cognac, wood, toffee, vanilla, caramel, fruits, alcohol and light bitterness. Full bodied. Low carbonation. Very complex. Too sweet, but it’s a 17,3% abv beer. With a little more carbonation, this could be great!

Fra fat på CBC mai-13: barley wine er godterier for greie gutter, og denne er intet unntak. Brun ravfarge, klar og fin med beige skum. Så kommer aromaen opp og jeg greier ikke vente lenger. Barley wine lagret på cognacfat, ah so smooth. I toppsjiktet denne kvelden.

Draft: Poured murky brown. Aroma is sweet malt and fig dark fruit. Nice mix of sweet malts and candy with a alcohol burn that balanced in the finish.

Bottle @ Mikkeller Bar in SF. Didn’t find this one on shelve anywhere so I’m glad to have found it for on-site consumption. 17.3% alcohol so had to split it with some of the team at the bar.
A - Dark raisin juice brown. Super murky so dark. The one finger head faded very fast. The cork popped but only slightly, and not too surprising honestly. Obviously, alcohol legs coat the glass.
S - Smells incredible. Sweet liquor with bakers chocolate and prune and fig with bakers chocolate and fresh toffee.
T - Taste is incredibly unique. It’s carbonated but only lightly. It drinks like a liquor, a thick sweet wine and a bit of particles in it. Thick almost like a soup maybe less so. Very sweet, the amount of dark fruits and white zin grape presence is huge. So prune and raisin heavy. Boozy only in the finish.
M - Thick, viscous, vinous, sweet and super huge unlike any beer ever.
O - Nowhere near drinking like 17% ABV except in mouthfeel. This will age beautifully.

Draught @ CBC2013. A total of 3 samples. Pours slightly hazy deep amberish copper with a small brownish golden head that quickly dissipates without leaving any trace on the glass. Smell is sweet and malty with biscuits, caramel, toffee, charred wood, raisins, figs, prunes, cognac, roasted nuts, alcohol, moist tobacco and hints of cocoa powder. taste is sweet and malty with biscuits, caramel, toffee, sweet dark bread, cognac, charred wood, vanilla fudge, raisins, figs, prunes, roasted nuts, hay, moist tobacco and hints of dried cherries and dark chocolate. Mouthfeel is round, smooth, boozy and full bodied. Finish is sweet and very tiny fruity tart with biscuits, caramel, sweet dark bread, raisins, figs, prunes, roasted nuts, charred wood and hints of cognac. Served way to old but as it warmed up the beer revealed itself to be a wonderful, dense, incredibly heavy barley wine. Intense and with a sting of cognac but the 17% are nowhere to be found which makes this a very deceptive beer.

CBC 2013. Pours clear pale mahogany. Aroma is sweet raisins caramel fidges dark fruits malty. Flavor is velvety boozy; as aroma; good bitterness, well balanced.

Large shared bottle.
Spicy and dark fruit notes in the nose. Hints of brandy.
Body seems a bit light but is fairly smooth for ABV.
A bit boozy in the finish.

Bottle pour @ The BeerMongers... Poured deep ruby/burgundy/mahogany with a thin khaki head. Aroma of vinous distilled wine and oak with mellow fruit. So smooth and drinkable. Not too heavy on the oak or booze. Well rounded with noticeable cognac and sweetness. Nice fruitiness with toasted notes, fruity simple syrup, and a light grainy finish. Unbelievably good.

Bottle at City Beer. Nose is a strong malty, boozy, vanilla combo. Very much reminds me of Thomas Hardy. Seems to be a bit oxidized with a vinous character. Like fruit roll ups sort of. Pour is a murky brown. Minimal off white head. Taste is straight amaze-balls! A moderate vanilla and cream character up front. Strong fruitiness after that. A lot of cherry. Just a wonderful malt, bready taste rounded off with a sticky sweet character. Oxidation doesn’t really come across on the palate. Medium mouthfeel but a bit low of carbonation. Not flat but close. Just a light his when the cork came out. Leaves a sticky sweetness on the lips. Definitely a bit of boost in the finish. A light warming in the ears, but doesn’t seem 17%. Well made on that aspect. A wonderful delight.

On tap @ Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2013. A monster! It’s somewhat clear and deep red-brown in the glass this one. A bit anonymous on the nose at first, so better let it breathe for a while. A while later; oh yeah, lots of sweet dark fudge and caramel here. Not even a hint of the alcohol, but it’s really deep complex and concentrated this. Figs, dates and other sweet dried fruits, some cocoa traces and a strong big good amount of cherry. Mmhhh.. Really nice! Loaded with flavors also, and here you’ll most definitely items can sense the alcohol. Yo can actually almost see and touch it as well. Sticky and concentrated in the mouth with a soft prickling carbonation level. Loaded with dark fruits and some cough syrup. Slightly salty also in a way, a dry the cherry is definitely present the in the taste as well. Lots of taste, perhaps a bit to much? Is that even possible? 03.05.2013
