4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Draught @ CBC2013. A total of 3 samples. Pours slightly hazy deep amberish copper with a small brownish golden head that quickly dissipates without leaving any trace on the glass. Smell is sweet and malty with biscuits, caramel, toffee, charred wood, raisins, figs, prunes, cognac, roasted nuts, alcohol, moist tobacco and hints of cocoa powder. taste is sweet and malty with biscuits, caramel, toffee, sweet dark bread, cognac, charred wood, vanilla fudge, raisins, figs, prunes, roasted nuts, hay, moist tobacco and hints of dried cherries and dark chocolate. Mouthfeel is round, smooth, boozy and full bodied. Finish is sweet and very tiny fruity tart with biscuits, caramel, sweet dark bread, raisins, figs, prunes, roasted nuts, charred wood and hints of cognac. Served way to old but as it warmed up the beer revealed itself to be a wonderful, dense, incredibly heavy barley wine. Intense and with a sting of cognac but the 17% are nowhere to be found which makes this a very deceptive beer.

3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle @ Mikkeller Bar in SF. Didn’t find this one on shelve anywhere so I’m glad to have found it for on-site consumption. 17.3% alcohol so had to split it with some of the team at the bar.
A - Dark raisin juice brown. Super murky so dark. The one finger head faded very fast. The cork popped but only slightly, and not too surprising honestly. Obviously, alcohol legs coat the glass.
S - Smells incredible. Sweet liquor with bakers chocolate and prune and fig with bakers chocolate and fresh toffee.
T - Taste is incredibly unique. It’s carbonated but only lightly. It drinks like a liquor, a thick sweet wine and a bit of particles in it. Thick almost like a soup maybe less so. Very sweet, the amount of dark fruits and white zin grape presence is huge. So prune and raisin heavy. Boozy only in the finish.
M - Thick, viscous, vinous, sweet and super huge unlike any beer ever.
O - Nowhere near drinking like 17% ABV except in mouthfeel. This will age beautifully.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pour from bottle at What the Funk!? 2014. Appearance is glowing caramel with no head - good alcohol legs. Big fig, oak, raisins, chocolatey, caramel, rich brown sugar, toffee, candi sugar, and brandy in the aroma. Smells amazing. Taste is rich plum, wood, bourbon, grapey, caramel, brown sugar, cognac, and vanilla with no signs of the high ABV. Slick mouthfeel with soft cabronation. Such a rich and beautifully executed beer. Like drinking a glass of brandy.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Fra fat på CBC mai-13: barley wine er godterier for greie gutter, og denne er intet unntak. Brun ravfarge, klar og fin med beige skum. Så kommer aromaen opp og jeg greier ikke vente lenger. Barley wine lagret på cognacfat, ah so smooth. I toppsjiktet denne kvelden.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Sampled at the W&C Clayton. It poured a deep brown color with an off-white head. The aroma was of rich malts, some oak, dark fruits, cognac and a touch of hops. The taste was of caramel, toffee, oak, cognac, raisins and other dark fruits with a lot of some booze. Awesome.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle from Churchkey in D.C. Split with a few buddies.
The beer looks like a muddy cola. Brownish gray and murky with an inch of thick, khaki hued cap. Not a very nice looking beer. However, every other aspect of the beer (all of the important attributes) is fantastic.
The aroma brings the cognac front and center. Additional notes of toffee, oak, booze, leather, brown sugar. Fabulous flavor, carrying every delectable whiff of the aroma into the taste. Rich and smooth. Delicate on the palate with a gentle, silky finish. 17.3% abv?!? Dangerously drinkable. Teeming with flavor, this is a beer to sip and savor. A top notch example of the style. I’d love to have this again sometime.

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle (got you covered on this too, Mike). Dark brown with golden head. Aroma is amazing, some oxidised sherry notes, sherry, dried fruit, chocolate, dates. Taste is delightful as well, dates, raisins, sherry, tastes like Pedro Ximinez. Very sweet and alcohol well hidden. Excellent

4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Bottle generously shared by Tony. Thick soupy pour that’s a murky poo brown in color with a fleeting mocha head. Sweet caramel aromas. Sweet caramel, brown sugar, and toffee upfront with the boozy cognac bite in the finish. Huge body with a mind numbing mouthfeel. I would love to have a bottle to sit down for five years or so.....

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Draft @ Humpy’s. Pours a very murky, rusty copper color with a tiny off white head. Aroma is almost all raisin and toffee, there is some light fruity esters and wood. Flavor is toffee/caramel, dark dried fruit mostly with some light bitterness and a very tame alcohol presence. Medium body with a mild, soft carbonation. Hard to believe this one is 17%, drinks like a 10% beer, really reminds me of smoother, cleaner, Tomas Hardy. I hope Gabe bottles this.
