750ml bottle a bit of a gusher but not an issue - pours a deep chestnut brown with an off white head. I get a lot of fruity Pinot notes both on the nose and palate. Oak, fig, leather, combined with a perfect tartness, nice carbonation, medium bodied, more Pinot notes, freaking delicious.

Shared from a year old 750ml bottle. Looks like a stout, dark nearly opaque, with a foamy chocolate, mocha head. Smells like berries, chocolate, coffee, pinot and funk. This is a sipper, for an 8.5% sour it drinks pretty thick and the alcohol is present. Flavors of mocha, deep pinot and wine barrels, chocolate, espresso, figs, dates, plums and a touch of charcoal smoke and some sour funk at the end. The carbonation is on the lower side, but adds a nice touch to this incredibly complex beer. This is the first aged Anchorage beer Iíve enjoyed. So delicious, so unique, so complex- I would drink this thing now, it has aged beautifully and I canít see it getting better. Perfect balance of fresh flavors and aged sour funk.

Bottle poured into tulip during #bottlecherwednesday at Beachwood Seal Beach. Opaque and very dark brown body, a half finger of tan head with high retention that eventually settles to a ring and islands. Aroma is citrus tartness, wine barrel wood, roasted malt, some coffee, and a touch of earthy funk. Taste is initially light sweetness with burnt sugar and molasses, then comes the sour: citrus and apple skin, some bitter roasty notes on the finish. Medium body, thick but smooth texture, moderate-plus carbonation, slightly sour dry puckering finish. A lot going on in this beer!

Bottled. Pours hazy deep brown with a small tan head. Aroma of overripe fruit, toasted caramel, chocolate and brett. Sweet flavor that end up dry and slightly tart. Medium bodied, oily texture and soft carb. An excellent sour.

Pours translucent brown color with tan head. Aromas of toasted malts and funkiness with some oak and wine. Sour toasted malt and cherry flavors with some wine, brett and oak with hints of chocolate. Light to medium body with lively carbonation.

Nice beer! Bottle one year old. Pours cola black with an immediately disappearing head and no lacing. Nose is barnyard and light roasted cereal. Notes of light espresso, sour cherries, yeast. Taste is light sweet medium sour, minimal bitterness. Light body with low/medium carbonation.

UPDATED: MAR 16, 2014 Pours dark as night. Little head that dissipates rather quickly. Aroma of red wine, sour cherry and oak. Taste of wine, sour cherry, bitter dark chocolate and coffee. A bit spicy on the palate as well. The flavors that develop when this beer warms are fantastic! Great roasty sour ale!

My Bottom Line:
An intense interplay of brettanomyces, lactobacillus, wine barrel and chocolate-y malts produces a complex brew which one must sit down to sip on.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slice of foam covers the blackness.
-Carbonation is prickly, forceful.
-The finish is dry with lots of brett and peppery, coniferous hop bitterness.
-Malts also contribute raisin-like qualities.
-This probably needs to lie down for a while. Itís already impressive, but perhaps too boastful for my tastes.

I didnít have much idea what to expect from this beer, but Anchorage beers are always worth trying in my experience. This one is a way-out-of-the-box experiment in wine and chocolate. Only a puff on opening, but it left unattended in the kitchen after pouring a glass, it foams over and leaves a good sized amount of beer to stain the white counter. In my tulip it pours dark near black with a robust if short-lived brown head. Unusual nose melds aromas not usually experienced together: tons of chocolate: chocolate cake, bakerís chocolate; bretty sour funk; intense red wine barrel. Also hints of balsamic and steak sauce, cobweb, wet fur musk.
Strange as that combination seems, the taste actually follows fairly directly. The wine is right up front, bringing a blackberry juiciness that Iíd associate with a merlot more than a pinot, plenty of chocolate roast, more wild than sour, closer to Jolly Pumpkin than any other brewery I can think of, sweet on the early part of the finish before drying out with a roast coffee finish. Mouth-filling palate, some heat on the back of the throat long after swallowing. Itís an interesting experiment, packed with flavors so big that 12 ounces are good; 22 is too much. I bet this one kills it in the 2 oz pour category. Thatís points off in the overall.
No surprise - this one is not subtle in the least. I need to start drinking subtle again.
