Double IPA aged in French oak Chardonnay barrels with Brett. Deep within the tortured aberrations of a monk’s mind there lay a concept of a Holy Grail of beer -- a beer oft imagined but never tasted, strived for but never achieved. It’s Belgian heritage manifested in its yeasty complexity, softened and rounded in its cooperage Français and made to sparkle like the stars first seen by his distant predecessor Dom Pérignon. Bitter Monk Belgian Double IPA is such a beer. Redolent of citrusy hop bittering and massive malt infusion, this is a beer to ponder, to sip, and, even for a monk, to dream. Why then is the monk so bitter? What provokes that sly smile? What is he wearing under that flowing robe? A triple-fermented beer gives him three times the mystery. Remember, anything worth doing is worth over doing. Nothing exceeds like excess. Even for the cloistered. And what rough monk, his hour come round at last, slinks slowly toward Brussels to be reborn.

UPDATED: FEB 15, 2013 Appearance: cloudy golden in color, thick white head, head lasts and laces very nicely Aroma: fruit, some hoppy grass, strawberry, sweet, smells amazing, orange, clean, complex Taste: orange, citrus, hops start to kick in and become more and more prominent to the end, Palate: not overly carbonated, leaves a slight lingering hop aftertaste Overall: very interesting beer, one of the best smelling beers I’ve tried, makes the orange/citrus work better than most beers ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle @ home. Cloudy golden orange pour with a tall white head. Nice combination of melon and citrus on the nose. Some tangy pineapple and tropical fruits, too. A bit of pine and yeast as well. There’s a lot of white wine and bitter hop flavor to it. A bit too much oak and bitterness for me. Lots of lemon and grapefruit peel as well. Lacks the fruit character of the aroma.

Bottle poured and shared by Prufrockstar, via Furthur. Thanks guys! Pours a cloudy yellow color. Lemon, slightly sour, bretty. Lingering Belgian yeast finish. Incredible citrus fruit flavor throughout, thick body to it. Very nicely done. Loved it.

Cloudy, beer the color of apple juice, super creamy white head and copious lace. Aroma sour apple, kombucha, pineapple, green grass. Taste is pineapple, mango and spruce, hops bitter finish. Something spice floats through, just at the finish. Palate is kind of thick, carbonation very soft and fine. In all, super tropical, juicy, and dry, bitter finish.

Bottle at home. Pour is hazy golden with a big white head and sticky lacing. Tropical fruity - pineapple, mango, mandarins - some grass notes, biscuit lemon zesty, white pepper, and doughy aroma. Taste is lemongrass, dough, weedy, white pepper, herbal, lightly alcoholic, orange peel, and marmalade with a big bitter finish. Medium body with high carbonation. Pretty good, but not as good as some of Anchorage’s other offerings.

Bottle as shown. Pours a cloudy orange with small white head that lasts leaving spotty lacing. The aroma is Belgian yeast and brett. Medium mouth with strong brett and honey, with light sweetness, hides alcohol well, very good.

this beer reminds me so much in every way of the orval trapist ale. This is also brewed with brettanomyces. Very enjoyable.
